도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 1일(현지시간) 상호관세 유예 기간 연장을 생각하고 있지 않다고 밝혔다.
영국 '로이터 통신'에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 이날 플로리다주 방문 후 워싱턴DC로 돌아오는 미 대통령 전용기 기내에서 가진 기자간담회에서 오는 8일(현지시간)까지인 상호관세 유예 기간 연장 관련해 이같이 밝혔다.
그러면서 일본 관련해 "일본을 상대해 왔는데 합의할지 확신 못하겠고 의문시 된다"며 "(일본산 수입품 경우) 30%·35%, 우리가 결정하는 어떤 수치 관세를 부과할 수 있다"고 말했다. 또 "인도와는 무역합의 할 가능성이 있다"고 밝혔다.
앞서 지난 4월 9일 트럼프 대통령은 상호관세 유예 전 일본에 대해 24% 상호관세율 책정 후 발표한 바 있는 가운데 상향 가능성을 시사하고 나선 것이다.
전날 트럼프 대통령은 자신의 트루스소셜에 올린 글에서도 일본에 대해 "대량 쌀 부족을 겪고 있는데도 우리 쌀을 수입 않으려 한다"며 "일본에 무역 관련 서한을 보낼 것"이라고 밝힌 바 있다.
앞서 지난 4월 9일 트럼프 2기 행정부는 한국·일본 포함 57개 경제주체(56개국+유럽연합)에 차등화된 상호관세 발효 후 13시간 만에 90일간 유예(중국 제외)하는 결정을 내린 바 있는 가운데 유예 기간은 오는 8일 종료된다.
또 상호관세 유예기간 각국과 관세율·무역 균형·비관세 장벽 철폐 등을 의제로 무역 협상을 진행해온 가운데 최근 상호관세 유예 기간 만료에 앞서 협상에 적극적이지 않은 국가 경우 일방 설정한 상호관세율을 서한으로 통보할 것이라며 경고해왔다.
한편 트럼프 대통령은 내년 5월 임기 만료되는 제롬 파월 연방준비제도(Fed·연준) 의장 후임자 후보로 2∼3명을 염두에 두고 있다고 밝힌 가운데 앞서 지난 6월 25일에도 파월 의장 후임으로 3∼4명을 염두 중이라고 언급한 바 있다.
