스콧 베선트 미국 재무부 장관이 6일(현지시간) "트럼프 대통령은 우리 교역 파트너 일부에 '협상을 진전시키지 않으면 8월 1일 다시 4월 2일 관세 수준으로 돌아갈 것'이란 내용 서한을 보낼 것"이라고 밝혔다.
이날 미 'CNN'에 따르면 현재 미 무역 협상을 이끄는 베선트 장관은 인터뷰에서 '8일 상호관세 유예 끝나면 어떻게 되나'란 질의에 "우리는 향후 72시간 동안 매우 바쁠 것"이라며 이같이 전했다.
그러면서 "우리가 많은 합의를 매우 곧 보게 될 거라 생각한다"며 현재 협상에 진전 없는 국가들 경우 그간 유예해온 상호관세를 오는 8월 1일부터 재부과하겠다는 입장을 재확인했다.
또 "서한 받는 국가들이 협상에 속도 내 합의할지 기존 상호관세율로 돌아갈지는 그들 선택"이라며 "최대 압박을 가하는 전술"이라고 했다.
이어 '오는 8일 전 협상 타결 임박 국가가 있나'란 질의 관련해선 "우리는 몇 개 합의에 근접했다"고 전했으나 해당 국가는 공개하지 않았다.
더불어 "우리와 교역을 많이 하지 않는 작은 국가들에 아마 100개 서한을 보낼 것이며 이들 국가 대부분은 이미 10% 기본관세를 적용받고 있다"며 "이들 국가 다수는 우리한테 (관세 문제 논의 관련) 연락조차 하지 않았다"고 밝혔다.
케빈 해싯 백악관 국가경제위원회(NEC) 위원장 역시 이날 미 'CBS' 인터뷰에서 '주요 무역 파트너와의 협상이 9일까지 타결되지 않으면 트럼프 대통령은 유예를 연장할 건가'란 질의에 "미국은 세계서 일어나는 모든 문제에 대해 모든 국가와 대화할 준비가 돼 있다"며 "시한이 있고 거의 (합의에) 가까워진 사안들이 있어 아마도 이 사안들은 시한을 넘길 수 있다"고 했다.
스티븐 미런 백악관 경제자문위원회(CEA) 위원장도 이날 미 'ABC 뉴스'에 출연해 협상 시한 연장 가능성 관련해 "성실히 협상하고 합의를 위해 양보하는 국가들이 있으나 더 많은 시간이 필요하기에 아직 합의가 이뤄지지 않았다"며 "내 예상엔 그런 국가들은 일정을 조정할 수 있을 것"이라고 했다.
앞서 지난 4일 트럼프 대통령은 12개 국가에 적용될 상호관세율을 적시한 서한들에 서명했고 오는 7일 발송 예정이라고 밝힌 바 있다. 이런 가운데 미 고위 관료들이 입을 모아 현재 미국과 성실하게 협상을 진행 중인 국가들 경우 협상 기한 연장 가능성을 시사하면서 막판 압박 강도를 높이는 형국이다.
