전쟁을 할 때 패배하지 않으려면 고지(高地)를 먼저 점령(占領)해야 합니다. 왜? 고지에 있으면 사람이 이동하는 게 다 보이기 때문입니다. 적군이 고지 아래에서 고지를 향하여 올라온다면, 그곳을 향하여 총격을 가하면 됩니다.
대한민국은 이미 국제 경쟁사회에서 여러 가지의 고지(高地)를 점령한 국가가 됐다고 생각합니다. 필자가 볼 때, 대한민국은 적게 계산해도 10가지가 넘을 정도의 고지를 점령했습니다.
필자는 세계에서 가장 부자 동네(도시)라 할 수 있는 미국 뉴욕의 맨해튼에서 5년 동안 살아본 경험이 있습니다. 이런 시각에서 말할 때, 지금의 한국 서울은 미국의 맨해튼을 앞선, 최고의 국제도시가 됐습니다. 나의 경험담입니다.

그런데 대한민국이 어려 면에서 선진국으로 자리를 확고하게 잡았다고 주장했는데, 이 가운데 한국의 상수도(수돗물)이 세계 최고라고 생각합니다. 우리나라의 수돗물은 정수 과정을 거쳐 매우 깨끗하게 공급되고 있습니다. 한국수자원공사(K-water)는 국민들에게 '건강한 수돗물'을 공급하기 위해 다양한 노력을 기울이고 있다고 합니다. 한국의 수돗물은 엄격한 관리와 고도정수 과정을 거쳐 대부분의 지역에서 음용 가능한 수준의 수질이 유지되고 있습니다.
