시는 14일 청사 내 대외협력실에서 언어·문화 NGO ‘bbb 코리아’와 외국어 통역서비스 구축을 위한 업무협약(MOU)을 체결했다.
이번 협약은 APEC 회의 참가 외국인뿐 아니라 향후 급증할 해외 관광객의 언어 불편을 최소화하고, 글로벌 관광도시로서의 위상을 높이기 위한 조치다. 협약에 따라 양측은 24시간 실시간 전화통역이 가능한 체계를 구축하고, 식당·택시·숙박시설·관광안내소 등 외국인 방문이 잦은 곳에 서비스를 확대 적용할 계획이다.
bbb 코리아는 2002년 설립된 언어·문화 전문 NGO로, 현재 20개 언어에 대해 수천 명의 자원봉사 통역사를 확보하고 있다. 특히 이번 통역 서비스는 AI 기반 자동 번역과는 달리, 사람이 직접 전화로 통역을 지원하는 ‘휴먼 통역’ 방식으로, 앱을 통해 원하는 언어를 선택하면 즉시 통역봉사자와 연결되는 구조다. 3자 간 통화도 가능해 외국인과 상인의 직접적인 의사소통을 원활히 돕는다.
경주시는 이번 협약의 활용도를 높이기 위해 관광안내 리플릿 배포, SNS 홍보, 현장업체 대상 교육 등 다양한 지원책도 병행할 방침이다.
