도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 14일(현지시간) "미 대법원은 트럼프 행정부가 교육부 기능을 각 주로 되돌리는 절차를 진행할 수 있다고 선언함으로써 전국 학부모·학생들에게 중대 승리를 안겼다"고 밝혔다.
미 'AP 통신' 'NYT' 등에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 이날 미 연방 대법원이 트럼프 2기 행정부의 연방 교육부 직원 약 1천400명 해고 강행 허용 결정을 내린 것과 관련해 자신의 트루스소셜에 올린 글에서 이같이 밝혔다.
그러면서 "대법원의 위대한 결정을 갖고 린다 맥마흔 교육부 장관이 이 매우 중요한 과정을 시작할 수 있을 것"이라며 향후 연방 교육부 해체·각 주로의 기능 이관 작업 등의 본격화를 시사했다.
미 대법원은 이날 보스턴 소재 매사추세츠주 연방법원 명 전 판사가 내린 명령을 뒤집고 이같이 결정했다.
전임 조 바이든 행정부 때 임명된 한국계 전 판사(한국명 전명진)는 지난 5월 22일 판결에서 해고된 교육부 직원들 복직·교육부를 폐지하는 트럼프 대통령의 지난 3월 행정명령 실행을 금지하란 내용의 '예비적 효력 정지 명령'을 내린 바 있다.
