제네바 출장에서 서울로 돌아오는 길, 북극항로를 따라 비행기가 러시아 상공을 지날 즈음이었다. 기내 스크린에는 오래된 영화 한 편이 떠올랐다. 고등학교 시절 이후 다시 마주한 '닥터 지바고(Doctor Zhivago)'였다. 설원을 가르며 달리는 열차와 얼어붙은 창밖의 풍경, 그리고 사랑과 혁명의 폭풍 속에 놓인 한 시인의 얼굴이 차례로 펼쳐졌다. 영화는 한 세기 전, 1914년 제1차 세계대전과 러시아 혁명, 그리고 그 뒤를 이은 백군과 적군의 내전이라는 역사적 배경을 따라 전개되었다.

보수도 마찬가지다. 진짜 보수는 기득권을 지키는 것이 아니라, 무너진 문명 위에 다시 인간을 세우는 것이다. 시대를 건너는 길은 총칼이 아닌 말과 펜으로, 증오가 아닌 사랑과 책임으로 열려야 한다. 우리가 꿈꾸는 지도자는 권력의 중심에 앉은 자가 아니라, 고요한 설원 속에서도 방향을 잃지 않는 사람이어야 한다. 시대정신을 읽고, 국민에게 말을 걸고, 정치적 승자가 되지 않더라도 양심과 품격을 지켜내는 사람이어야 한다.
지금 대한민국의 보수는 길을 잃었다. 자유민주주의라는 명분은 형식에 갇혔고, 책임과 헌신의 철학은 잊혔으며, 국민을 향한 연민과 사랑마저 식어버렸다. 현실 정치는 냉혹한데, 보수는 정권의 무게를 감당하기는커녕 내부 권력 다툼에 몰두하며 스스로의 존재 이유를 흐리기 시작했다. 싸움은 계속되지만, 무엇을 위해 싸우는지조차 모호해졌다.
계엄령 선포라는 헌정질서의 중대한 위기 앞에서도 국민의힘 지도부는 명확한 입장을 내지 못했다. 책임 있는 정치인들은 침묵하거나 계산에 빠졌고, 지도자는 분열을 방치한 채 시대 앞에 책임지지 않았다. 그 결과로 이어진 대통령 탄핵은 단순한 정권의 실패가 아니었다. 박근혜 전 대통령의 탄핵이 한 사람의 무너짐이었다면, 윤석열 전 대통령 탄핵은 보수 전체의 도덕성과 통치 시스템이 무너진 사태였다.
문제는 단지 사건이 아니라 그에 대한 태도였다. 누구도 책임지지 않았고, 지도부는 말을 아꼈으며, 중진들은 눈을 감았다. 젊은 정치의 가능성은 외면당했고, 당은 다시 계파와 지역주의의 늪에 빠졌다. 충성 경쟁이 판단을 가렸고, 국정 실패 앞에서도 반성과 사과는 없었다. 결국 보수는 ‘국민의 대표’가 아니라 ‘기득권의 대리인’이 되고 말았다.
이런 상황은 하루아침에 만들어진 것이 아니다. 2017년 박근혜 전 대통령의 탄핵 이후 보수는 이념이 아닌 감정, 논쟁이 아닌 언어의 폭력으로 내전에 빠졌다. 서로를 향한 비난과 분열은 이어졌고, 정권을 잃고도 교훈을 얻지 못했다. 문재인 정부의 실정 속에 탄생한 윤석열 정부는 보수 재건의 마지막 기회였지만, 그것마저 놓쳐버렸다.
이제 곧 열릴 전당대회는 단순한 당권 경쟁이 아니다. 보수가 다시 시작할 수 있을지, 아니면 역사 속으로 퇴장할지를 결정짓는 마지막 분기점이다. 더 이상 정치기술이나 계파 연합으로는 돌파할 수 없다. 지금 필요한 것은 권력의 분배가 아니라 책임의 고백이다. 누가 먼저 물러날 것인가, 누가 국민 앞에 고개를 숙일 것인가, 누가 '이 모든 실패는 내 책임'이라고 말할 것인가.
보수에 필요한 것은 권력이 아니라 겸허다. 전략이 아니라 품격이고, 기득권이 아니라 책임이고, 생존이 아니라 양심이다. 지금 이 자리에서 다시 시작하려면, 먼저 자신을 돌아보고 국민 앞에 진심으로 사죄해야 한다. 그 용기 있는 자기고백에서부터, 보수의 재건은 시작된다.

The Russia of that era, intertwined with turmoil and decline, hope and destruction, came to me like a landscape passing by under the airplane window. I stared at the screen for nearly three hours, holding my breath. In it, a revolution more tragic than war and a love more tragic than revolution unfolded one after another. At one point, I felt tears welling up in my eyes. It wasn’t just because of simple emotion. It was because the narrative of chaos and loss that Yuri Zhivago experienced overlapped with the reality that current Korean conservative politics faces.

Mutual criticism and division continued, and they failed to learn lessons even after losing power. The Yoon Seok-yeol government, which was born amidst the failures of the Moon Jae-in government, was the last chance to rebuild the conservative party, but it missed even that.
