도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 20일(현지시간) '스콧 베센트 미 재무장관이 자신에게 제롬 파월 연방준비제도(Fed·연준) 의장 해임을 만류했다'는 미 'WSJ(월스트리트저널)' 보도에 “전형적 거짓말”이라고 정면 부인하면서 일축했다.
영국 '로이터 통신'에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 이날 자신의 트루스소셜에 글을 올려 “WSJ는 베센트 장관이 역사상 최악 연준 의장을 해임하는 게 시장에 좋지 않을 것이라며 나에게 설명했다고 주장하고 늘 그렇듯 거짓말을 이어갔다”고 밝혔다.
그러면서 “누구도 나에게 그런 설명 할 필요 없고, 나는 시장에 뭣이 좋은지 누구보다 잘 알고 있다”며 “내가 없었다면 시장은 현재 기록적 고점을 달성할 수 없었을 것이고 아마 폭락했을 것”이라고 강조했다.
또 “사람들은 나에게 설명 않는다"며 "내가 그들에게 설명한다”고 덧붙였다.
전날 'WSJ'는 “트럼프 대통령이 기준금리 인하 요구에 부응 않는 파월 의장에 대한 해임을 검토하자 베센트 장관이 시장·경제에 미칠 부정적 영향·법적 리스크를 거론하며 만류했다”고 보도한 바 있다.
그간 트럼프 대통령은 기준금리를 내리지 않는 연준을 비판하면서 파월 의장을 겨냥해 온 가운데 지난 16일 공화당 의원들과의 비공개 회동에서 파월 해임 서한 초안을 보여준 것으로 알려지기도 했다.
앞서 지난 18일 트럼프 대통령은 100억불(약 14조) 규모 명예훼손 손해배상 소송을 제기한 가운데 'WSJ' 기자 2명·발행사 다우존스·모회사 뉴스코퍼레이션·창립자 언론재벌 루퍼트 머독을 피고로 지목한 바 있다.
