도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 24일(현지시간) 상호관세 관련해 "(일본 처럼) 다른 나라도 돈 내고 관세를 낮추는 것을 허용하겠다"고 밝혔다.
미 'ABC 방송' 등에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 이날 워싱턴 DC 연방준비제도(Fed·연준) 청사 공사 현장에서 '다른 나라도 돈 내고 관세를 낮출 수 있는 가'란 취재진 질의에 "그렇다"며 이같이 답했다.
그러면서 "일본이 약속한 투자는 대출 같은 게 아닌 '사이닝 보너스'로 일본이 선불로 냈다"고 전했다. 사이닝 보너스는 계약 체결 시 선지급하는 돈을 의미한다.
또 "일본은 우리한테 5천500억불을 줬으며 관세를 약간 낮췄다"며 "그러고 나서 일본은 자기 경제(시장)를 모두에 개방하는 데 동의했는데 이건 쉽지 않았다"고 전했다.
이어 "경제 개방은 일본이 낸 5천500억불보다 더 가치 있어 경제 개방·지불금을 함께 해 (관세율을) 15%로 낮췄다'며 "하지만 일본 관세율은 약 28%였으며 일본은 기본적으로 관세 인하를 구매한 것"이라고 밝혔다.
더불어 "(일본의 대미 투자는) 종잣돈"이라며 "EU(유럽연합)도 (협상이) 꽤 잘 되고 있고 다른 국가들도 있는데 모두 매우 큰 거래들로 (미국은) 엄청난 돈을 벌 것"이라고 덧붙였다.
지난 22일(현지시간) 이뤄진 미·일 간 무역 합의에서 일본은 5천500억불 규모 대미 투자를 약속한 가운데 상호·자동차 관세율은 각각 15%로 줄였다.
