도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 26일(현지시간) 태국·캄보디아 간 국경 교전 관련해 "양측은 즉시 만나 휴전 그리고 궁극적으로 평화를 신속 가능케 하자는 데 동의했다"고 밝혔다.
이날 트럼프 대통령 트루스소셜에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 "태국·캄보디아 휴전 중재를 위해 각국 정상과 통화했다"며 이같이 전했다. 트럼프 대통령은 현재 미·EU(유럽연합) 간 상호 관세 무역 협상차 영국 스코틀랜드에 머물고 있다.
그러면서 "양측 모두 즉각적 휴전·평화를 원한다"며 "양측은 또 미국과 무역(협상) 테이블에 다시 앉기를 원하는데 싸움이 끝날 때까지 그건 적절치 않다 생각한다"고 밝혔다.
또 "두 국가가 앞으로 수년간 잘 지내길 바란다"며 "모든 게 끝나고 평화가 찾아오면 양국과 우리 무역 합의를 체결하길 기대한다"고 했다.
이어 "양국이 미국 휴전 중재를 받아들이지 않으면 미국과의 무역 협상을 중단하겠다"며 "공교롭게도 우리는 현재 양국 모두와 무역 협상을 하고 있으나 양국이 싸운다면 어느 한 국가와도 협상을 타결하고 싶지 않고, 그들에게 그렇게 말했다"고 전했다.

앞서 지난 4월 트럼프 대통령은 인도·파키스탄 간 국경 분쟁 당시에도 중재에 나섰던 가운데 '미국과의 무역을 지렛대 삼아 두 국가 휴전을 성사했다'고 밝힌 바 있다.
트럼프 대통령은 앞서 세계 각국에 보낸 관세 서한을 통해 오는 8월 1일부터 캄보디아 36% 태국 36% 상호관세 부과를 각각 통보한 가운데 현재 양국은 관세율을 낮추기 위해 미국과 협상을 진행 중이다.
한편 트럼프 대통령은 27일(현지시간) 스코틀랜드에서 우르줄라 폰데어라이엔 EU 집행위원장과 만나 미·EU 간 상호 관세 무역 협상을 벌이는 가운데 오는 28일(현지시간)엔 키어 스타머 영국 총리와 회담을 가질 예정이다.
앞서 지난 24일(현지시간) EU 회원국들은 930억 유로(약 150조) 규모 미국 제품에 최대 30% 보복 관세를 부과하는 패키지를 승인한 가운데 오는 8월 7일부터 발효된다.
