홍준표 전 대구시장은 7월26일 인터넷 저널인 페이스북에 “지난 2021년 10월 국민의힘 대선후보 경선 때 특정종교가 개입했다”는 내용을 폭로-공개했다.
이 글에서 “지난 2021년 10월, 국민의힘 대선후보 경선 때 신천지예수교 증거장막성전의 역할을 확인하기 위해 대구시장 재직시절인 2022.8.경 신천지예수교 증거장막성전 교주 이만희씨를 경북 청도 이만희 교주 별장에서 만난 일이 있었다. 많은 이야기를 들었는데 지난 대선후보 경선때 신천지 신도 10여만명을 국민의힘 책임당원으로 가입시켜 윤석열후보를 도운 것은 윤석열 후보가 검찰총장 시절 코로나 사태때 신천지 압수수색을 두번이나 청구 못하게 막아 주어 그 은혜를 갚기 위해서라고 했고 지금도 그 신도들 중 상당수는 그당의 책임당원으로 활동하고 있다고 했다.”고 강조하고 “소문이 사실로 확인된 모골이 송연한 순간이었지만 가입과 탈퇴가 자유로운 민주 정당에서 나는 그걸 막을 방법을 찾지 못했다. 그 당에는 신천지 외에도 유사 종교집단들이 상당수 들어와 있다고 하고 심지어 전광훈목사의 자유통일당 당원들도 이중당적으로 있다고도 한다. 당내 경선이 정상화 될려면 조속히 이들을 정비해야 당내민주주의가 정상을 되찾을 거다. 잡아떼면 된다는 생각으로 나를 모해하면 안 된다. 적어도 나는 팩트가 아니면 말하지 않는다”고 덧붙였다.
이에 대해 국민의힘 당사자-신천지 예수교회측은 반론을 펼쳤다.

뉴시스 지난 7월26일자에 따르면 “권성동 국민의힘 의원은 7월26일 홍준표 전 대구시장이 지난 2021년 윤석열 전 대통령의 국민의힘 대선 후보 선출 배경에 특정 종교가 있었다고 주장한 것을 두고 "전형적인 허위사실 유포라고 반발했다”고 보도했다. 이어 이 신문은 “권성동 의원은 이날 자신의 페이스북에 "홍준표 전 대구시장의 발언은 문제의 원인을 늘 타인에게서 찾는 '홍준표식 만성질환'의 재발”이라고 지적했다.

신천지예수교 증거장막성전측은 7월27일 발표한 “정치인은 더 이상 신천지예수교회를 정치적으로 악용하지 말라” 제목의 성명에서 “정치인은 신천지예수교회를 정치적으로 이용하는 행위를 즉각 중단해야 한다"고 주장했다.
이 성명을 통해 ”대한민국에서 선거철만 되면 정치권은 신천지예수교회를 표 계산의 도구로 삼아 왔다. 기성교단의 표를 얻기 위해 신천지예수교회를 희생양 삼고, 정권이 바뀔 때마다 정치적 필요에 따라 공격해 왔다. 이 같은 행태는 종교의 자유를 정면으로 침해하는 반헌법적 폭력“이라고 전제하고 ”코로나19 사태 당시 정부와 대구시는 방역 실패에 신천지예수교회를 희생양 삼았다. 모든 책임을 신천지예수교회에 떠넘기며 전 국민적 혐오를 조장했다. 그러나 사법부는 감염병예방법위반에 대해 ‘무죄’ 판결을 내렸고, 신천지예수교회에 대한 비난이 근거 없는 정치적 희생양 만들기였음이 명백히 밝혀졌다“고 피력했다.
이어 신천지예수교 증거장막성전측은 “윤석열 당시 검찰총장이 신천지예수교회에 대한 압수수색을 막았다는 주장도 전혀 사실이 아니다. 윤석열 전 총장은 신천지예수교회에 대해 여러 차례 압수수색을 지휘하였고, 신천지예수교회 대표와 중진들을 구속하는 강제수사를 직접 이끌었다. 이런 인물을 신천지예수교회가 정치적으로 도왔다는 주장은 상식적으로도 납득할 수 없는 억지일 뿐”이라고 지적하고 “그럼에도 불구하고 최근 홍준표 전 대구시장은 사실과 전혀 다른 주장을 공개적으로 유포하며 신천지예수교회를 다시금 정치적으로 악용하려 하고 있다. 홍 전 시장은 신천지예수교회 대표를 방문해 인사 정도만 나눴을 뿐, 홍 전 시장이 주장하는 것처럼 신천지예수교회 대표는 당원가입 등의 발언을 하지 않았음에도 이를 날조해 교회를 비방하는 것은 명백한 허위사실 유포이고 이에 대해 홍준표 전 시장은 법적 책임을 져야 할 것”이라고 강조했다.
이어 “신천지예수교회 성도도 대한민국 국민이다. 대한민국 헌법은 국민 개개인의 정치적 자유와 종교의 자유를 명백히 보장하고 있다. 신천지예수교회 성도들도 대한민국 국민으로서 다양한 정당의 당원으로 활동할 수 있다. 이를 정치 공세의 빌미로 삼고, 특정 종교 단체에 대한 혐오를 조장하는 행위는 민주주의의 근간을 훼손하는 일”이라고 덧붙였다.
