올해로 15회째를 맞은 CKC 2025는 지난 28일부터 8월 1일까지 열리는 북미 최대 규모의 한-캐 과학기술 교류 행사로, 캐나다한인과학기술자협회와 한국과학기술단체총연합회가 공동 주최했다. 행사에는 양국 산·학·연·관 관계자 500여 명이 참여해 과학기술 및 이차전지 분야 등에서 협력 방안을 논의했다.
포항시는 이번 행사에서 지자체로서는 유일하게 배터리 세션에 초청돼 프레젠테이션을 진행했다. 서현준 포항시 배터리첨단산업과장은 30일 컨퍼런스 발표자로 나서 ‘대한민국 배터리 산업의 심장, 포항(Pohang, The Heart of South Korea’s Battery Industry)’을 주제로 포항의 전략과 비전을 소개하고, 오는 11월 개최 예정인 ‘국제 배터리 엑스포 2025 포항’에 대한 국제 사회의 관심과 참여를 요청했다.
이번 포항시의 참가는 지난해 10월 퀘벡 에너지특구 대표단의 포항 방문, 올해 1월 캐나다 대사 및 비즈니스 사절단의 방문 등으로 구축된 협력 관계의 연장선에서 이뤄졌다. 또한 지난 5월 세계 지방정부 기후총회 간담회에서 다미안 페레이라 주한 퀘벡 정부 대표의 요청에 따라 이강덕 포항시장이 직접 참석을 지시하며 추진됐다.
현지 방문 기간 동안 포항시는 맥길대학과 몬트리올대학교를 찾아 포스텍 등 지역 대학과의 공동연구 및 인재 교류 방안을 논의하며 장기적인 국제 학술협력 파트너십을 제안했다. 이와 함께 에코프로이노베이션과 ‘트리니티 프로젝트’를 추진 중인 캐나다 공기업 하이드로퀘벡(Hydro-Québec)을 방문해 리튬메탈 음극 및 전고체전지 분야의 기술 동향을 공유하고 향후 협력 가능성에 대해 의견을 나눴다.
또한 에코프로와 포스코퓨처엠이 북미 시장 공략을 위해 생산기지를 조성 중인 베캉쿠르 현장을 직접 방문해 관계자들과 면담을 진행하고, 이를 기반으로 도시 간 협력 모델도 논의했다.
포항시는 이번 캐나다 방문을 통해 포항의 배터리 산업 도시모델이 글로벌 공급망으로 본격 확장되고 있음을 확인했으며, 북미 시장과의 협력 체계를 더욱 공고히 하는 계기가 됐다고 평가했다.
한편 포항시는 그동안 구축해온 글로벌 이차전지 협력 네트워크를 기반으로 오는 11월 ‘국제 배터리 엑스포 2025 포항’을 성공적으로 개최해 지속 가능한 에너지 산업을 선도하고, 글로벌 배터리 허브 도시로서의 위상을 한층 강화해 나갈 계획이다.

Pohang City announced on the 31st that it attended the "2025 Korea-Canada Science and Technology Conference (CKC 2025)" held in Montreal, Canada, to solidify the foundation for cooperation with the North American battery market and introduce the status and strategies of Pohang's secondary battery industry.
Now in its 15th year, CKC 2025, held from the 28th to August 1st, is the largest Korea-Canada science and technology exchange event in North America. It was co-hosted by the Korean Canadian Scientists and Engineers Association and the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies. Approximately 500 participants from industry, academia, research, and government from both countries participated in the event, discussing cooperation in areas such as science and technology and secondary batteries.
Pohang City was the only local government invited to the battery session and presented at the event. Seo Hyun-jun, Director of the Battery Advanced Industry Division of Pohang City, presented at the conference on the 30th under the theme "Pohang, The Heart of South Korea's Battery Industry." He introduced Pohang's strategy and vision and requested international interest and participation in the "International Battery Expo 2025 Pohang," scheduled to be held in November.
Pohang's participation builds on the cooperative relationship established during the visit to Pohang by the Quebec Energy Zone delegation in October of last year and the visit of the Canadian Ambassador and business delegation in January of this year. Furthermore, Pohang Mayor Lee Kang-deok personally directed the city's participation at the World Local Government Climate Summit in May, following a request from Damien Pereira, the Quebec Government Representative to Korea.
During the visit, Pohang City visited McGill University and the University of Montreal to discuss joint research and talent exchange opportunities with local universities, including POSTECH, and proposed a long-term international academic partnership. In addition, the team visited Hydro-Québec, a Canadian public corporation that is promoting the "Trinity Project" with EcoPro Innovation, to share technological trends in lithium metal cathodes and all-solid-state batteries and discuss potential future collaborations.
The team also visited the Bécancourt site, where EcoPro and POSCO Future M are building a production base to target the North American market, and met with officials to discuss inter-city cooperation models.
Pohang City confirmed that this visit to Canada demonstrates the full-scale expansion of Pohang's battery industry city model into a global supply chain and that it served as an opportunity to further solidify its partnership with the North American market.
Meanwhile, Pohang City plans to successfully host the "International Battery Expo 2025 Pohang" in November, building on its established global secondary battery cooperation network, to lead the sustainable energy industry and further strengthen its status as a global battery hub.
