미국 백악관이 31일(현지시간) "오늘 밤 자정까지 협정이 체결되지 않으면 8월 1일부터 (새로운) 상호관세율이 발효된다"고 밝혔다.
영국 '로이터 통신'에 따르면 캐롤라인 레빗 미 백악관 대변인은 이날 워싱톤 DC 백악관 언론 브리핑에서 이같이 전했다.
그러면서 앞서 미국과 무역협상을 타결한 일본·EU(유럽연합)·한국 등에 대해 "(도널드 트럼프) 대통령이 체결한 맞춤형 무역협정을 보유하고 있다"고 전했다.
또 "미국과 협정 없거나 관세 서한을 받은 나머지 국가들은 오늘 밤 자정 마감 시한까지 연락받을 것"이라며 "트럼프 대통령은 오늘 오후나 저녁 늦게 행정명령에 서명할 것"이라고 전했다.
이어 "전 세계적으로 200개 이상 국가가 통상·관세팀에 접촉을 시도했으며 핵심 무역 파트너를 (협상) 우선순위로 삼겠다 했고, 18개국 중 3분의 2와 맞춤형 협정을 체결했다"며 "만약 아직 우리에게 연락받지 못했다면 오늘 밤 자정까지 서한·행정명령을 통해 연락받을 것"이라고 했다.
더불어 "외국 지도자들이 이 기한(8월 1일)이 자신들에게 내일부터 진짜 문제임을 깨닫고 트럼프 대통령에게 전화를 걸고 있다"며 "협상 테이블에 제안을 가져오고 있다는 걸 알고 있다"고 했다.
레빗 대변인은 "트럼프 대통령이 미국 내 약값을 낮추기 위해 17개 메이저 제약사 최고경영자에게 서한을 발송했다"고 덧붙였다.
트럼프 대통령은 해당 서한을 자신의 트루스소셜에 올린 가운데 "만약 여러분이 조처하지 않는다면 우리는 미국 가정을 계속되는 약값 폭리에서 보호하기 위해 모든 수단을 동원할 것"이라고 밝혔다.
