포스코그룹은 7월 31일 발표한 공식 입장문을 통해 “불의의 사고로 소중한 생명을 잃은 고인과 유가족께 깊은 애도와 진심 어린 사과를 전한다”며 “국민 여러분께도 작업 현장의 안전 문제로 심려를 끼쳐드린 점 머리 숙여 사과드린다”고 밝혔다.
이번 사고에 대해 포스코는 “결과 중심의 불가피한 사고로 보기보다는 근본적인 원인을 철저히 분석하고 해결하는 데 모든 역량을 집중하겠다”고 강조했다.
이를 위해 포스코그룹은 ▲그룹 중심의 안전관리체제로 전환 ▲하도급 구조 혁신 ▲안전 예산 대폭 확대 ▲안전 전문회사 설립 검토 ▲산재가족돌봄재단 설립 등 총체적인 안전관리 혁신 방안을 추진할 계획이다.
포스코는 우선 안전을 그룹 내 최고의 경영가치로 삼고, 기존 ‘사업회사 중심’의 안전관리에서 ‘그룹 중심’ 체계로 전환하겠다고 밝혔다. 이를 위한 첫 조치로 그룹 회장 직속의 ‘그룹안전특별진단TF팀’을 8월 1일 자로 신설하고, 외부 전문가와 노조, 직원 등 다양한 이해관계자가 참여해 전반적인 진단과 개선과제를 도출한다는 방침이다.
특히 “근로자는 보호의 대상이 아니라, 예방의 주체”라는 인식 아래 현장 노동자와 직원 대표에게도 안전경영 참여 권한을 적극적으로 부여하겠다고 밝혔다.

포스코 측은 “대한민국 하도급 구조 개선의 선도 기업으로서 책임을 다하겠다”며, 원청으로서의 역할 강화 의지를 강조했다.
포스코는 안전관리 혁신을 위한 예산도 대폭 증액할 계획이다. 특히 매출의 일정 비율 이상을 사전 집행·사후 보고 방식으로 안전 예산에 배정하고, 인프라 개선에도 과감히 투자하겠다고 밝혔다.

아울러 포스코는 ‘산재가족돌봄재단’ 설립 계획도 함께 발표했다. 재단은 장학금 지급과 유가족 지원 등 피해자 관점에서 실질적이고 다양한 복지사업을 추진할 예정이다.
