도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 5일(현지시간) "인도는 러시아산 석유를 대량 구매할 뿐 아닌 구매한 석유 상당 부분을 큰 이익을 남기며 판매하고 있다"고 밝혔다.
미 'CNN 방송'에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 이날 자신의 트루스소셜 글을 통해 인도에 러시아산 석유 구매 축소 압박 및 상호관세율 인상 등을 시사하며 이같이 전했다.
그러면서 "그들(인도)은 러시아 전쟁 기계에 의해 우크라이나에서 얼마나 많은 사람들이 죽는지 신경 쓰지 않는다"며 "그렇기 때문에 인도가 미국에 지불하는 관세를 상당히 인상할 것"이라고 밝혔다.
앞서 지난 7월 30일(현지시간) 트럼프 대통령은 "(인도는) 중국과 러시아 에너지 최대 구매국이 되고 있다"며 "1일부터 인도에 25% 관세 외 추가 페널티를 부과할 것"이라며 이미 한차례 인도를 겨냥한 바 있다.
앞서 지난 3일 트럼프 대통령 측근 스티븐 밀러 백악관 부 비서실장은 미 '폭스뉴스'에 출연해 "(트럼프) 대통령이 분명히 밝혔듯이 인도가 러시아산 원유를 구매해 우크라이나 전쟁 지속 자금을 지원하는 건 용납할 수 없다"고 지적한 바 있다.
미 정부는 러시아가 일정 시일 내 휴전을 수용 않을 시 인도 등 러시아산 원유 수입 국가에 최대 100% '세컨더리 제재(제대 대상국과 연관된 제3국에 대한 제재)' 관세를 부과한다는 방침이다.
이에 인도 정부는 외무부 대변인 성명을 통해 "인도를 겨냥한 건 정당하지 않고 비합리적'이라며 "인도는 우크라이나 전쟁 발발 이후 기존 석유 공급이 유럽으로 옮겨가면서 러시아 석유 수입을 시작했다"고 반발했다.
또 "당시 미국은 세계 에너지 시장 안정화를 위해 이걸 적극 장려했었다"며 "미국 역시 러시아 육불화우라늄·팔라듐 등 주요 광물·비료·화학물질 등을 수입하고 있다"고 거듭 반발했다.
더불어 "인도는 다른 주요 경제국과 마찬가지로 국익·경제안보 수호를 위해 필요한 모든 조치를 취할 것"이라고 덧붙였다.
현재 러시아산 석유 최대 구입국인 인도·중국은 이를 통해 러시아 전쟁 비용을 조달해주고 있다는 비판을 서방 국가들로부터 받고 있다.
