도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 5일(현지시간) JD 밴스 부통령을 가장 유력한 차기 대통령 후보로 꼽았다.
미 'CBS' 등에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 이날 워싱톤 DC 백악관에서 열린 '2028 로스앤젤레스 올림픽 게임' 관련 행정명령 서명식 중 취재진의 '밴스 부통령을 '마가(MAGA)' 후계자로 보는 가'란 질의에 이같이 밝혔다.
그러면서 “물론 아직 논의하긴 이르나 밴스는 분명히 훌륭한 일을 하고 있고, 현 시점에선 가장 선호될 가능성이 높다”며 "(마코 루비오 국무장관은) JD와 어떤 형태로든 협력할 수 있는 인물로 공화당에 다른 놀라운 인물들이 있다"고 했다..
앞서 지난 5월 미 'NBC' 인터뷰에서 트럼프 대통령은 차기 후임자 관련 질의에 "너무 이르지만 내겐 부통령이 있고 보통은 그렇게 된다”고 밝힌 바 있다.
밴스 부통령과 루비오 장관은 오는 2028년 공화당 대선 후보로 거론 중인 가운데 현재 두사람 모두 구체적 대선 출마 의지는 드러내지 않고 있다.
앞서 지난 4월 밴스 부통령은 미 '폭스 뉴스' 인터뷰에서 "대선에 집중 않고 있고, 그 시점이 되면 대통령과 논의할 것이며 우리가 뭘 원하는지 결정할 것”이라고 밝힌 바 있다.
또 루비오 장관 역시 지난 7월 미 '폭스 뉴스' 인터뷰에서 “밴스 부통령이 출마를 원한다면 훌륭한 후보가 될 것”이라며 “국무장관이 내 경력 정점이 된다면 만족할 것”이라고 밝힌 바 있다.
트럼프 대통령도 3선 출마 여지를 남기고 있는 가운데 이날 미 'CNBC' 인터뷰에서 '다시 대선에 출마할 것인 가'란 질의에 "아니다. 아마도 하지 않을 것"이라며 "출마를 하고 싶긴 하다. 역대 최고 여론조사 숫자를 받고 있다”며 여지를 남겼다. 미 헌법상 대통령 3선은 금지돼 있다.

President Trump, who is also open to running for a third term, responded to a question on CNBC today about whether he would run again, saying, "No, probably not." He added, "I would love to. I'm getting the highest poll numbers ever." The U.S. Constitution prohibits a president from serving a third term.
