충남 서산시가 민첩하고 적극적인 환경관리로 자칫 대형 수질오염 사고로 이어질 뻔했던 위기를 막아냈다.
서산시에 따르면, 지난 7월 15일 음암면 신장리의 한 폐공장에서 폐유와 철 스크랩 등 각종 오염물질이 담긴 드럼통 수십 개가 무단 방치된 사실이 확인됐다.
이와 같은 사실은 관내 다른 공장 주변에 형성된 기름띠를 제거하던 과정에서 인근의 폐공장까지 점검한 결과 발견됐다.
서산시는 위험성을 인지하자마자 기후환경대기과와 자원순환과 등 관련 부서가 합동으로 현장조사에 나섰고, 즉각적인 응급조치가 필요하다고 판단했다.
아울러 곧 다가올 집중호우에 대비해 오염물질이 인근 신장천, 나아가 간월호까지 확산되는 상황을 막기 위한 비상대책회의도 곧바로 이루어졌다.
당시 폐공장은 관리자가 없는 상태였다.
