필자는 한설 예비역 장군(육군 소장)을 몇 번 만나, 저녁 식사를 한 적이 있다. 육군 소장으로 예편한, 고위 예비역 장성이다. 한설 장군은 인터넷 저널인 페이스북에 자주 글을 올린다. 필자는 이 글들을 정독(精讀)하거나, 그 내용을 필자가 발행인으로 있는 브레이크뉴스에 보도해 왔었다. 그는 국제정세에 밝다. 러시아-우크라이나 전쟁의 진행과정에 관한 글도 수준급이다.
8월8일 페이스 북에 게재한 “초반부터 레임덕에 빠질 수도 있는 이재명 정권을 위한 고언” 제하의 글을 읽고, 호남출신으로서 호남 권력의 재건(再建)에 필요한 말들이 있다는 것을 알 수 있었다.

한설 예비역 장군은 이 글에서 “이재명(대통령)은 집권 이후 제2인자를 키우지 않고 권력기반을 공고하게 하려고 한 것으로 보이지만, 집권하자마자 그런 생각과는 전혀 다르게 상황이 전개되고 있는 것 같다. 이재명은 집권 기간 동안 안정된 권력행사를 위해서는 매우 현명하게 생각하고 행동해야 할 것으로 보인다. 지금과 같은 상황이 계속되면 이재명은 초반기에 정권운영의 동력을 상실하게 될지도 모른다. 권력투쟁은 항상 의외의 결과를 초래한다.”고 지적했다.
이어 “지금과 같은 문제를 초래한 가장 직접적인 책임은 호남에 있다고 생각한다. 호남은 이제까지 훌륭한 정치인을 배출했음에도 불구하고 스스로 그런 사람을 키우는데 실패했다. 그러다 보니 외부 정치세력의 식민지와 같은 처지에 빠진 것이다. 호남은 지금이라도 호남출신의 정치인을 되돌아보아야 할 것이다. 이제까지 문재인 정권에 부역한 호남사람들은 사실상 호남의 이익을 배반한 사람이었다. 문재인 시대에 호남이 어떤 이익을 보았고 어떤 발전을 했단 말인가?”라고 강조하고 “이재명 대통령도 권력을 안정적으로 장악하려면 과거 문재인(전 대통령)에게 부역하고 호남 대중을 배신했던 지역 토호들과 거리를 두고 제대로 된 호남 정치인들과 연대를 하는 생각을 해보아야 할 것이다. 필자는 지금과 같은 국제정치적 대격변의 시대에 집권 초기부터 이재명 정권이 흔들리는 상황이 조성되는 것은 결코 바람직하지 않다고 생각한다”고 덧붙였다.
필자는 한화갑 전 민주당 대표를 1986년부터 가까이 해왔다. 이 분은 김대중 전 대통령과 함께해온 호남의 대표적인 정치인이다. 한화갑 대표는 가끔씩 만날 때마다 “호남이 호남출신 정치인을 키워야 한다”는 말을 자주 하곤 했다. 한설 예비역 장군이 위의 글에서 밝힌 내용과 같은 맥락이다.
위기에 처한 영국을 총리(1940-1945)로서 2차 세계대전에서 승리케 하고, 그 후로도 총리(1951-1955)를 맡아 영국의 부흥을 이끌었던 윈스턴 처칠(1874-1965)이 국가를 위해 했던 일을 기억한다. 고령(66세)에 두번째 총리를 수임(受任), 총리직을 잘 수행했다.

I've met and had dinner with retired General Han Seol (Army Major General) several times. He is a retired senior general who retired as a major general. General Han frequently posts on Facebook, an online journal. I've carefully read these posts and reported their contents to Break News, of which I am the publisher. He is well-versed in international affairs. His writing on the development of the Russia-Ukrainian War is also of high quality.
After reading the August 8th Facebook post titled "Advice for the Lee Jae-myung Administration, Which May Fall into Lame Duck Status from the Beginning," I realized that, as someone from the Honam region, I had valuable advice for rebuilding power in the region.
General Han Seol noted in the post, "President Lee Jae-myung appears to have focused on solidifying his power base rather than developing a second-in-command since taking office. I recall the deeds of Winston Churchill (1874-1965), who led Britain to victory in World War II as Prime Minister (1940-1945) and then led Britain's revival as Prime Minister (1951-1955). He contributed to the success of the Kim Dae-jung administration. I believe he (Han Hwa-gap) is at the center of the Korean pro-democracy movement.
