【브레이크뉴스 포항】박영재 기자=포항시는 11일 북구 신광면 호리 곡영산 자락에 위치한 원법사의 전국 최초 ‘사찰형 민간정원’ 공식 등록을 기념하는 제막식을 개최했다고 밝혔다.
이날 행사에는 이강덕 포항시장을 비롯 각계 인사와 시민, 원법사 신도 등 300여 명이 참석해 원법사 명상정원 등록을 축하했다.
원법사 명상정원은 지난 6월 16일 ‘수목원·정원의 조성 및 진흥에 관한 법률’에 따라 경북도에 등록된 전국 최초의 사찰형 민간정원이다.
비학산과 용연지 등 자연환경이 어우러진 입지에 향나무 고목, 매화나무 등 20만여 본의 수목과 다양한 조경 자산이 조화를 이루며 전통 불교문화와 정원미를 즐길 수 있는 힐링 공간으로 조성됐다.
해운스님을 비롯한 원법사 신도들은 수년간 직접 나무를 심고 가꾸며 시민과 관광객이 자유롭게 이용할 수 있는 열린 정원을 만들었으며 연못·석물·계절 수목이 어우러진 경관은 도심 속 정서 회복과 여가 휴식의 가치를 높이고 있다.
해운스님은 “신도들이 정성을 다해 가꾼 명상정원이 시민과 관광객 모두의 치유와 안식의 공간이 되길 바란다”며 “앞으로도 사계절 다른 풍경을 연출하는 행복도량 원법사에서 행복 전도를 이어가겠다”고 말했다.
이강덕 포항시장은 “전국 최초 사찰형 민간정원인 원법사 명상정원은 녹색문화도시 포항의 새로운 자산”이라며 “도시와 자연이 연결된 정원도시 조성과 정원관광 활성화를 위해 민간정원 발굴과 기반 조성에 더욱 힘쓰겠다”고 밝혔다.
한편 포항시는 ‘산림조합 숲마을 정원’(2021년), ‘청하면 용산정원’(2025년)에 이은 원법사 명상정원 등록으로 3곳의 민간정원을 등록·운영 중이며 이로써 시가 추진하는 정원도시 비전 실현을 가속하고, 정원 인프라를 더욱 확충하게 됐다.

We will further develop the garden by discovering private gardens and establishing a foundation to foster a garden city that connects the city with nature and to revitalize garden tourism."
Meanwhile, Pohang City is currently registering and operating three private gardens, including the Wonbeopsa Meditation Garden, following the ‘Forestry Cooperative Forest Village Garden’ (2021) and ‘Cheongha-myeon Yongsan Garden’ (2025). This will accelerate the realization of the city’s garden city vision and further expand garden infrastructure.
