2019년 조국 전 법무부장관 사태와 2025년 조국 전 법무부장관 사면 복권을 돌아보면, 이는 단순한 정치적 사건에 그치지 않았다. 한국 사회가 드러낸 불편한 진실은 바로 부모와 기성세대, 그리고 정치 지도층의 모순과 부재다. 한국 근현대사는 질곡의 역사였다. 경술국치와 해방, 한국전쟁을 거치며 지배계층은 몰락했고, 대부분의 국민은 바닥에서 시작했기에 기계적 평등사상이 체화되었다. 이 평등사상은 한국의 자본주의를 지키는 강력한 기반이 되었다. 오늘날 일부는 부자가 되었지만, 자본주의 역사가 짧아 부유층이 두텁지 않다. 그 결과 많은 이들이 타인에 대한 배려보다는 오로지 자기와 가족의 생존에 몰두하며, 벼락부자가 되거나 권력을 잡아도 늘 불안한 삶을 살아간다. 그렇다고 한국 지도층을 무조건 탓할 수는 없다. 시간이 필요하다. 국민과 지도층이 꾸준히 노력하면 변화는 앞당겨질 수 있다.

한국 부모의 자식 사랑은 놀라울 정도로 자기 중심적이다. 내 자식만 잘되면 된다. 수단과 방법을 가리지 않고 모든 것을 합리화한다. 이는 공동체 윤리를 훼손하고, 사회적 신뢰를 갉아먹는다. 청년들이 분노하는 이유는 단순히 입시 불공정 때문만이 아니다. 사회 전체가 정직을 잃고, 남에게만 엄격한 잣대를 들이대는 현실에 대한 절규다. 검찰과 언론은 정의라는 이름으로 조국 가족을 무자비하게 짓밟았다. 정치적 목적과 상업적 이해가 뒤섞인 폭거였다. 반대로 진보 진영에서는 조국을 검찰개혁의 희생양으로 영웅시하며 불공정을 가렸다. 양쪽 모두 청년의 눈과 현실을 외면했다.
한국의 지도층은 서구 사회와 달리 노블레스 오블리제를 실천하지 않았다. 과오가 드러나도 책임을 지지 않고, 자기 절제와 모범을 보이지 않았다. 그 결과 사회 전체가 하향 평준화되었다. 공정은 남에게만 엄격하고 자신에게는 관대하며, 지도층조차 모범을 보이지 않는 사회에서 청년의 절규는 정당한 것이다.
그렇다면 한국은 왜 선진국의 길을 따라가지 못했는가? 역사적 전통을 보면 답은 명확하다. 서구 선진국들은 정직에 바탕을 두는 기독교 정신을 중심으로 도전정신, 창조적 상상력, 투명성, 섬김을 체화하며 국가를 발전시켰다. 우리에게도 전통적 지도층의 리더십이 있었다. 신라의 화랑도, 고려의 국선도, 조선의 사대부, 특히 정도전의 ‘참선비’ 정신이 그것이다. 참선비 정도전은 도전과 창조, 투명성과 위민정신을 몸소 실천했다. 그는 농촌적 야성에서 오는 강한 신념으로 변화를 두려워하지 않았고, 긴 유배생활 속에서 창조적 상상력을 배양했다. 공사구분을 철저히 지켜 부정부패를 최소화했고, 국민을 위한 정치, 백성의 행복을 최우선으로 삼았다. 이러한 덕목은 서구 자본주의 정신과 놀라울 정도로 유사하며, 한국의 한강의 기적과 단기간 시장경제 성장에도 기여했다.
오늘의 한국도 지도층이 먼저 모범을 보여야 한다. 잘못이 드러나면 즉시 책임을 지고 자리에서 물러나야 하며, 입시, 채용, 연구 성과 등 청년의 삶을 좌우하는 제도는 모두 공개되고, 권력과 재력을 동원해도 통하지 않아야 한다. ‘내 자식만’이 아니라 ‘공동체 속의 나’를 내면화하고, 도전정신, 창조적 상상력, 투명성, 섬김을 체화한 시대정신이 사회 전반에 뿌리내려야 한다.
조국 전 대표가 사면 복권되어 정치 재개에 나선 지금, 이 사건은 단순한 정치적 사건이 아니라 사회 전반의 공정과 정의 문제를 돌아보게 하는 계기다. 검찰과 언론의 행태나 진보진영의 영웅화 모두 청년의 시선에서는 불공정의 다른 얼굴일 뿐이었다.

This ideology of equality served as a strong foundation for Korean capitalism. While some have become wealthy today, the short history of capitalism means the wealthy class is not widespread. As a result, many people focus solely on their own survival and that of their families, rather than caring for others. Even if they become overnight rich or gain power, they live in constant anxiety. However, we cannot simply blame the Korean leadership. Time is needed. With the consistent efforts of the people and the leadership, change can be accelerated.
Korean parents' love for their children is astonishingly self-centered. They only care about their children's well-being. They rationalize everything, regardless of the means. This undermines community ethics and erodes social trust. The anger of young people isn't simply about college entrance exam injustice. It's a cry against a society where integrity is lost and strict standards are applied only to others. The prosecution and the media mercilessly trampled on Cho Kuk's family in the name of justice. It was an outrage woven from political agendas and commercial interests. Conversely, the progressive camp glorified Cho Kuk as a scapegoat for prosecutorial reform, obscuring the injustice. Both sides ignored the perspectives of young people and the reality.
Unlike Western societies, Korea's leaders failed to practice noblesse oblige. They failed to take responsibility for their mistakes, and they failed to set a good example by self-restraint. As a result, the entire society was leveled downward. In a society where fairness is strict for others and lenient for oneself, and where even the leaders fail to set a good example, the youth's outcry is justified.
So why hasn't Korea followed the path of advanced nations? The answer is clear when we look at historical tradition. Western developed nations developed their nations by embodying a spirit of challenge, creative imagination, transparency, and service, centered on the Christian ethos rooted in honesty. We, too, have had our own traditions of leadership: Silla's Hwarangdo, Goryeo's Gukseondo, Joseon's literati, and especially Jeong Do-jeon's "true scholar" spirit. Jeong Do-jeon, a true scholar, embodied the values of challenge, creativity, transparency, and service to the people. Driven by a strong conviction born from his rural nature, he was unafraid of change, and his long exile fostered his creative imagination. He strictly maintained the distinction between public and private affairs, minimizing corruption and prioritizing politics for the people and their well-being. These virtues bear striking resemblance to the spirit of Western capitalism and contributed to Korea's Miracle of the Han River and its short-lived market economy growth.
Today, Korea's leaders must also set an example. When wrongdoing is revealed, they must immediately take responsibility and step down. All systems that influence young people's lives, such as college entrance exams, hiring, and research outcomes, must be made public and impervious to the mobilization of power and wealth. We must internalize the idea of "me in the community," not just "my child," and the spirit of the times—embodying a spirit of challenge, creative imagination, transparency, and service—must take root throughout society.
Now that former Representative Cho Kuk has been pardoned and reinstated and is resuming his political career, this incident is not simply a political incident, but an opportunity to reflect on the issues of fairness and justice across society. From the perspective of young people, the behavior of the prosecution and the media, as well as the heroization of the progressive camp, are merely different faces of injustice.
To the youth, I say: Your anger is justified. The voices calling for fairness and justice are the force that changes the world. For Korean society to be sustainable, the fairness and justice that young people demand must be implemented within its institutions. Furthermore, leaders must act as role models, guided by the spirit of a true scholar. Only when the leadership sets an example, young people demand fairness, and institutions guarantee honesty and accountability can Korea truly join the ranks of advanced nations. The path to preventing the ostracization of all citizens and reshaping society begins here.
Young people, do not be discouraged. Your eyes, your anger, and your demands represent the hope for Korea's future. Courageously speak out on the path of justice, fairness, challenge, and creativity.
