도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 18일(현지시간) "푸틴 (러시아)대통령·젤렌스키 (우크라이나)대통령 간 회담 조율이 시작됐으며 회담 장소는 추후 결정될 예정"이라고 밝혔다.
미 'AP 통신'에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 이날 워싱톤 DC 백악관에서 열린 미·우크라·유렵 정상들 간 다자 회담 후 자신의 트루스소셜을 통해 "저는 회의 말미 푸틴 대통령에게 전화했다"며 "모두가 러·우크라 간 평화 가능성을 기쁘게 생각하고 있다"이같이 전했다.
트럼프 대통령은 이날 회담 중간 잠시 중단 후 블라디미르 푸틴 러시아 대통령과 40여분간 직접 소통한 것으로 전해졌다.
러시아 크렘린궁도 이날 양 정상 간 통화를 확인한 가운데 유리 우샤코프 푸틴 대통령 보좌관은 “(통화가) 솔직하고 건설적이었으며 두 정상이 앞으로 있을 협상에서 러·우크라 고위급 대표들이 참석하는 것을 논의했다고 밝혔다.
그러면서 "그 회담이 진행된 후 우리는 3자 회담을 개최 예정"이라며 "두 대통령에 제가 추가될 것"이라고 덧붙였다.
러·우크라 정상이 먼저 만나 협상을 진행하고 상호 간극을 확인 후 중재자인 자신이 참여해 합의를 이끌어내겠다는 구상인 셈이다.
또 "이건 거의 4년간 진행된 (러·우크라)전쟁 관련해 매우 좋은 초기 단계"라고 강조했다.
푸틴 대통령·젤렌스키 대통령 간 양자회담에선 평화 협정 최대 쟁점인 영토 교환 문제가 집중 논의될 것으로 보인다.
현재 러시아는 미 점령 지역 포함 우크라 동부 돈바스(도네츠크·루한스크) 지역을 양도 받아야 한다고 주장하고 있다. 반면 우크라 경우 러시아군이 점령하지 않은 지역은 내줄 수 없다며 양측 입장이 팽팽한 상태다.
