세계유산축전은 국가유산청이 주최하고 국가유산진흥원이 주관하는 국가유산 대표 활용 사업으로, 인류 공동 자산인 세계유산의 가치를 국내외에 널리 알리기 위해 마련됐다. 2020년 시범 시행 이후 올해로 6회째를 맞으며, 지금까지 약 195만 명이 다녀간 인기 문화축제다.
올해 축전은 △제주 △경주 △순천 △고창 등 네 곳에서 동시에 열리며, 이 가운데 경주는 단독 개최지로서 가장 많은 세계유산을 보유한 도시라는 상징성을 더한다. 경주에는 △불국사·석굴암(1995년) △경주역사유적지구(2000년) △양동마을(2010년) △옥산서원(2019년) 등 4곳의 세계유산이 등재돼 있다.
‘천년의 빛, 세대의 공존’을 주제로 열리는 이번 축전은 불국사·석굴암 세계유산 등재 30주년을 기념해 경주 전역을 무대로 다채로운 문화 체험을 선보인다. 개막식은 대릉원 동편 쪽샘지구에서 열리며, 황룡사 중문을 재현한 무대에서 펼쳐지는 뮤지컬 ‘황룡, 다시 날다’와 드론 라이트 쇼가 축제의 시작을 알린다.
13일과 14일에는 「삼국사기」와 「삼국유사」를 바탕으로 재해석한 ‘신라팔관회’ 공연이 무대에 오르며, 석굴암 명상 프로그램 ‘석굴암에서 나를 찾다’, 불국사 청운교·백운교 체험 ‘빛으로 쓰는 이야기 IN 불국사’ 등 체험형 프로그램도 마련됐다.
또한 첨성대 별자리 관측 ‘선덕여왕의 별애별일’, 양동마을 ‘야별행·독락당 고택밤마실’, 분황사 음악회, 향가와 처용무에 페르시아 서사를 결합한 ‘신 쿠쉬나메’ 등 야간 프로그램도 풍성하다.
특히 이번 행사는 2025 아시아태평양경제협력체(APEC) 정상회의를 앞두고 열려 국제적 관심이 집중될 전망이다. 경주시는 이번 축전을 통해 세계유산을 기반으로 한 문화외교의 장을 넓히고 글로벌 문화도시로서의 위상을 강화할 계획이다.
주낙영 경주시장은 “경주는 신라 천년의 수도이자 국내에서 가장 많은 세계유산을 간직한 도시”라며 “세계유산축전을 통해 찬란한 신라 유산을 오늘의 삶 속에 되살리고, 미래세대가 그 가치를 이어가길 기대한다”고 말했다.

The opening ceremony will be held in the Jjoksam District, east of Daereungwon Royal Tomb Complex. The festival kicks off with the musical "Hwangryong, Fly Again," performed on a stage replicating the central gate of Hwangnyongsa Temple, and a drone light show.
On the 13th and 14th, the "Silla Palgwanhoe" performance, a reinterpretation of the Samguk Sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms) and Samguk Yusa (Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms), will be performed.
