브레이크뉴스 노보림 기자= 작품은 작가를 닮는다는 말이 있다. 어찌 보면 창작자의 생각이나 작업 환경은 그대로 작품에 투영될 수밖에 없다. 때문에 작품을 들여다보기 이전에, 작가를 먼저 들여다보면 그 작품을 보다 잘 이해할 수 있다. 이에 브레이크뉴스는 국내 작가들과의 릴레이 인터뷰를 통해 작가의 작품은 물론, 삶의 이야기를 들어보는 시간을 가지려고 한다. <편집자 주>
-작품을 그릴 때 주로 어디에서 영감을 받나.
주로 일상과 책에서 많은 영감을 받는다. 이번 컬렉션 역시 ‘신화 속 상상동물 열전’과 ‘묘신계록’에서 큰 영향을 받았다. 우리나라의 신수와 요괴들이 한국적인 스토리를 품고 하나의 거대한 유니버스로 확장되는 과정은 무척 흥미로웠다. 또한 아이와 함께 읽는 그림 동화책은 내게 특별한 보물창고이다. 따뜻한 메시지와 참신한 아이디어들이 비주얼 스토리로 표현되어 있어, 아이와 공감하며 읽는 순간들이 작업에 풍부한 영감을 불어넣는다.
-독자들에게 자신의 작품 2~3점 소개해 달라.

전통 이야기 속에는 다양한 매력의 캐릭터들이 등장하지만, 가장 정이 가는 동물은 거북이다. 요령은 부족하지만 꾸준히 나아가는 나의 모습이 거북과 닮아 있어서일지도 모른다. 이번 컬렉션에서는 등껍질 위에 복덩이들을 이고 다가와 내게 미소 짓는 거북들을 그렸다. 그중 Peachidian은 화사한 복사꽃을 피운 거북으로, 행복과 장수의 마음을 담았다.

Soulbird는 하늘과 땅을 잇는 인면조에서 영감을 받았다. 인면조의 얼굴은 고전적인 미인을 그렸는데, 작업 중 나의 내면을 비추는 거울 같은 느낌을 받았다. 지친 날 이 작품을 바라보면, 잠시 쉬었다 다시 시작하자는 위로를 건네는 듯하다. 청아한 연화와 보름달을 품은 Soulbird는 다시 날아갈 용기를 북돋워 준다.
-왜 작가로서의 삶을 선택했나.
어릴 적부터 그림을 그리고 무언가를 손으로 만드는 것을 무척 좋아했지만, 오랫동안 그것은 취미의 영역에 머물렀다. 패션 업계에서 오랜 시간 일하며 예술과 디자인에 가까이 지낼 수 있었고, 그 덕분에 일도 즐겁게 할 수 있었지만, 마음 한편에는 그림을 그리고 싶은 목마름이 늘 있었다. 그러던 중 코로나로 미얀마에서의 패션 사업을 정리하던 시기에 전통채색화를 배우기 시작했고, 곧 평생 하고 싶은 일이 될 만큼 그림 그리는 일을 멈출 수가 없었다. 작가로서의 출발은 늦었지만, 그동안 쌓아온 다양한 삶의 경험을 담아 앞으로도 작품 활동을 이어가고자 한다.
-작가로 활동하며 가장 힘들었던 순간이 있다면 언제였나.
나의 전통채색화 작업은 긴 호흡을 필요로 한다. 리서치와 스케치를 모두 마친 후에도 채색만으로 한 달 이상이 걸리기도 한다. 최근 반년은 첫 개인전 준비와 더불어, 두 아이(2살, 6살)를 돌보는 육아, 그리고 스페인으로 작업실을 옮기며 진행한 인테리어 공사까지, 한시도 쉴 틈이 없는 나날이었다. 그림을 제대로 완성하지 못할 것 같은 불안감과 스트레스, 그리고 가족과 충분히 시간을 보내지 못했다는 미안함이 뒤섞인 시간과의 싸움이 내게는 가장 힘든 순간이었다.
-반대로 가장 행복했던 순간은?
가장 행복했던 순간을 하나로 꼽기는 어렵지만, 일상 속 소소한 행복은 많다. 내 그림을 좋다고 따라 그리는 아들과 함께 그림을 그리는 시간, 온 가족이 함께 미술관을 관람하고 카페에 앉아 담소를 나누는 시간, 그리고 한 달에 한 번 스페인에서 전통채색화 원데이 수업을 진행하는 순간까지—그림과 관련된 무언가를 누군가와 함께하는 시간이 큰 행복을 안겨준다.
-앞으로의 전시 계획은
하랑갤러리에서 열리는 개인전에서 한국의 상상 판타지 속 캐릭터들을 담은 작품들을 선보일 예정이다. 앞으로는 이를 확장해 하나의 유니버스로 만드는 작업을 구상하고 있다. 여러 나라에서 오랜 시간 거주했고, 현재는 스페인과 한국을 오가며 생활하고 있는 만큼, 한국적이면서도 전 세계 관객이 폭넓게 공감할 수 있는 소재와 스토리를 담은 전시를 이어갈 계획이다.

-Why did you choose a life as an artist?
I've loved drawing and making things with my hands since I was young, but for a long time, it remained a hobby. Working in the fashion industry for many years allowed me to be closely involved in art and design, which made my work enjoyable, but deep down, I always had a thirst for drawing. Then, during the COVID-19 pandemic, I began learning traditional colored painting. It quickly became a lifelong passion, and I couldn't stop. Although my career as an artist began late, I plan to continue my work, drawing on the diverse life experiences I've accumulated.
-What was the most challenging moment in your career?
My traditional colored painting work requires a long process. Even after completing all the research and sketches, the coloring alone can take over a month. The past six months have been a busy time, with preparations for my first solo exhibition, parenting my two children (ages 2 and 6), and interior renovations for my studio relocation to Spain. The most difficult moments for me were the battle against time, a mixture of anxiety and stress about not being able to properly complete a painting, and regret for not being able to spend enough time with my family.
- On the other hand, what was your happiest moment?
It's hard to pinpoint a single happiest moment, but there are many small joys in everyday life. From drawing with my son, who likes to copy my drawings, to visiting art galleries and chatting in a cafe with the whole family, to even taking a one-day traditional painting class in Spain once a month—any time I share something related to painting with someone brings me immense happiness.
- What are your future exhibition plans?
In my solo exhibition at Harang Gallery, I plan to showcase works featuring characters from Korean fantasy worlds. I plan to expand this into a single universe. Having lived in various countries for many years and currently living between Spain and Korea, I plan to continue to present exhibitions that feature subjects and stories that are both Korean and relatable to audiences around the world.
