JD 밴스 미국 부통령이 20일(현지시간) 미·유럽 공조 하에 제공키로 한 대 우크라이나 안전 보장 관련해 "어떤 일이 일어나고 어떤 형태가 되든 유럽이 부담의 가장 큰 몫을 감당해야 할 것이며 이는 그들의 대륙·안보"라고 밝혔다.
미 '폭스 뉴스'에 따르면 밴스 부통령은 이날 '폭스' 인터뷰에서 "(대 우크라 안전 보장은) 우리가 그 부담을 져야 한다 생각치 않는다"며 "우리는 전쟁·살육을 끝내는 데 필요하다면 도움 돼야 한다"고 말했다.
그러면서 "미국은 (대 우크라 안전 보장 제공 관련) 대화에 열려 있으나 우선 전쟁을 중단시키는 데 무엇이 필수적인지를 파악 때까지 약속하지 않을 것"이라고 말했다.
또 "블라디미르 푸틴 러시아 대통령과 여러 차례 전화로 소통한 경험이 있다"며 "(푸틴 대통령은) 매우 신중하고 조심스럽다"고 평했다.
더불어 "나는 근본적으로 그(푸틴 대통령)가 자신이 생각하는 러시아 이익을 추구하는 사람이라 생각한다"고 덧붙였다.
앞서 전날(현지시간) 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령은 미 '폭스 뉴스' 인터뷰에서 우크라에 대한 미군 파견 가능성에 선을 그은 바 있는 가운데 이날 미 백악관도 이를 공식 확인했다.
