포항시, 지역 기업과 상생협력으로 철강 위기 극복 나섰다

【브레이크뉴스 포항】박영재 기자=포항시가 포스코 등 지역기업들과의 협력으로 철강산업 위기 극복에 적극 나서고 있다.

글로벌 경기침체와 중국 저가 공세, 보호무역 강화 등으로 국내 철강산업이 어려움을 겪고 있는 가운데, 시는 지역경제 활성화와 청년 일자리 창출을 위해 다양한 사업을 추진 중이다.

특히 포스코와 상생협력사업의 물꼬를 트는 포스코 직원 기숙사 신축·이전 사업을 본격화한다.

당초 포스코는 본사 인근 기존 기숙사(동촌생활관)를 재건축할 계획이었지만 이상휘 국회의원(포항 남·울릉)이 시내 신축 이전을 적극 추진하며 포스코와의 의견 조율에 결정적 역할을 했다.

이에 포스코는 도심 활력 제고와 지역사회와의 동반 성장을 위해 시내 일원에 800실 규모의 기숙사를 짓기로 했다. 이에따라 도심 공동화 해소, 지역 상권 활성화, 청년 근로자 주거 안정에 기여할 것으로 기대된다.

이강덕 포항시장은 “지역 철강업계의 위기 극복과 미래 성장 기반 마련을 위해 지역기업과 여·야 국회의원 모두가 힘을 합쳐야 할 때”라며 “이번 포스코와의 협력 사업이 지역기업과의 동반 성장의 발판이 되길 희망한다”고 강조했다.

한편, 포항시는 포스코홀딩스와의 긴밀한 협업을 통해 과학기술정보통신부 공모사업인 ‘체인지업 그라운드 지역확산 모델 구축사업’에 선정됐다.이에 총사업비 277억 원(국비 99억 원, 지방비 168억 원)을 투입해 포항경제자유구역 내 창업·기업혁신 공간을 조성할 계획이다.

이 사업은 오는 2028년까지 4년간 추진되며, AI 기술을 기반으로 한 스타트업들의 성장을 지원할 수 있는 50개사 입주 규모의 인큐베이팅 센터를 구축할 예정이다.

A total project cost of KRW 27.7 billion (KRW 9.9 billion from the national government and KRW 16.8 billion from local governments) will be invested to create a startup and corporate innovation space within the Pohang Free Economic Zone.

This project, which will run for four years until 2028, will build an incubation center capable of housing 50 companies to support the growth of AI-based startups.
