인천대에 따르면, IYPF는 정답이 정해져 있지 않은 6개의 문제를 5개월 동안 실험·분석·탐구하여 창의적으로 해결하고, 그 결과를 바탕으로 다른 팀들과 발표, 반론, 평론의 토론을 진행하여 심사위원들의 평가를 받는 탐구 토론 분야와, 1개의 과년도 탐구 주제 또는 물리현상에 관한 자유 탐구 주제를 선정하여 실험·분석하고, 그 탐구 결과를 포스터로 제작하여 발표하는 포스터 분야로 나눠 진행됐다.
탐구 토론 분야에서는 3회전(9차전)의 치열한 예선전과 결승전을 진행한 결과, 인천아라고등학교 물리애몽팀이 최종 우승했으며, 준우승은 송도고등학교 패러데이팀과 POTENTIAL팀에게 돌아갔다.
