한국원자력환경공단, 태백시청 방문…연구용 지하연구시설 추진상황 설명

【브레이크뉴스 경주】박희경 기자=한국원자력환경공단(이사장 조성돈) 경영진은 28일 연구용 지하연구시설(URL) 부지로 선정된 강원도 태백시청을 찾아 이상호 태백시장 등 주요 관계자들과 만나 추진 현황과 향후 연구개발 방향을 공유했다.

조성돈 이사장은 이 자리에서 “연구용 지하연구시설은 고준위 방사성폐기물 처분을 위한 핵심 기술 개발과 국가 전략기술 확보, 연구인력 양성, 처분사업에 대한 사회적 수용성 확보를 위해 반드시 필요한 시설”이라며 “고준위 방폐물 특별법에서도 설치를 의무화하고 있는 만큼 차질 없는 사업 추진을 위해 최선을 다하겠다”고 밝혔다.

이상호 태백시장은 “태백시는 태백URL을 통해 1조원 규모의 대체산업을 기반으로 청정에너지 도시로의 대전환을 준비하고 있다”며 “태백URL 사업의 성공적 착수와 국가 R&D 체계 확립, 지역경제 활성화 방안에 대해 공단과 긴밀히 논의하길 기대한다”고 말했다.

한편, 공단은 28~29일 양일간 태백시에서 제187차 이사회를 열고 주요 현안을 논의했으며, 이사진은 태백URL 부지와 연구개발(R&D) 테스트 부지를 직접 방문해 추진 상황을 점검했다.
