대통령실이 2일 "이재명 대통령이 이달 말 미국 뉴욕 유엔 총회에 참석해 기조 연설을 한다"고 전했다.
강유정 대변인은 이날 오전 용산 대통령실 브리핑을 통해 "이 대통령은 9월 23일 화요일부터 미국 뉴욕서 개최되는 제 80차 유엔 총회 고위급 회의에 참석 예정"이라며 이같이 밝혔다.
그러면서 "이 대통령은 9월 23일 유엔 총회 기조 연설을 통해 대한민국이 경험한 민주주 위기 극복·회복 과정을 국제사회와 공유하고, 한반도 문제를 비롯 주요 글로벌 현안에 대해 정부 비전·정책을 제시 예정"이라고 했다.
또 "이 대통령은 대한민국 대통령으로선 처음 유엔 안전보장이사회 의장 자격으로 안보리 공개 토의를 직접 주재한다"며 "우리나라는 9월 한 달 간 안보리 의장국을 맡게 되고, 24일 인공지능(AI)·국제평화·안보 주제로 공개 토의를 개최할 것"이라고 했다.
이어 "안보리 토의 주제는 주재국이 정한다"며 "미국·영국 등이 주도하는 AI 이슈를 대한민국이 주도하겠다는 선언적 의미도 담겼다"고 했다.
더불어 "이번 회의에선 AI 기술의 급속한 발전이 국제 평화·안보에 미칠 영향·기회를 논의하고 국제사회 공동대응 방향을 모색 예정"이라며 "이 대통령 유엔 총회 참석은 신뢰받는 파트너로서 대한민국 자리를 확인하고, 글로벌 다자외교 무대서 대한민국 리더십을 한층 강화하는 계기가 될 것으로 기대한다"고 했다.
강 대변인은 양자 회담 가능성 관련해 "다양한 국가 많은 정상들이 유엔을 찾기 때문에 다자 외교가 있을 수 있으나 아직 구체적 일정을 밝힐 수 있는 단계는 아니다"며 "일정이 정해지는 대로 공지할 것"이라고 덧붙였다.
유엔 총회 고위급 회의는 매년 9월 셋째 주 화요일부터 약 일주일간 열리는 가운데 193개 회원국 정상급 인사들이 대거 참석하는 세계 최대 다자 외교 무대다.
