권영국 대표는 9월 3일 성명을 통해 이같이 밝히며, “이스라엘의 폭력이 집단학살이라는 데는 더 이상 이견이 없다. 지난달 27일엔 유엔 인권최고대표사무소(OHCHR) 직원들이 이러한 입장을 발표했고, 홀로코스트 연구자인 유대계 미국인 학자 오마르 바르토프 교수도 뉴욕타임스 기고에서 같은 입장을 밝혔다”고 부연 설명했다.
권 대표는 “지난 2년간 가자지구에서 약 6만 명이 숨졌다. 그중 80% 이상이 민간인이라는 분석도 있다. ‘국경없는 의사회’가 운영하는 가자지구 병원의 환자 중 3분의 1은 15세 미만 아동이라고 한다”며, “집단학살이라는 말 외에 이 참혹함을 설명할 수 있는 단어는 사전에 없다”고 날 선 비판을 했다.
