도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 3일(현지시간) '나토(NATO·북대서양조약기구) 동맹국 폴란드 주둔 미군의 철수·감축 계획은 없으나 다른 나라 경우 고려 중'이라고 밝혔다.
영국 '로이터 통신'에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 이날 워싱톤 DC 백악관에서 열린 카롤 나브로츠키 폴란드 대통령과의 정상회담에서 '미군이 폴란드에 남는 가'란 취재진 질의에 "그렇다"며 이같이 밝혔다.
그러면서 "폴란드가 원하면 더 많은 군인을 두겠다. 폴란드는 오랫동안 더 많은 미군을 원했다"며 "미군은 폴란드에 남을 것이며 우리는 폴란드와 정말 많이 동조하고 있다"고 했다.
또 "우리는 매우 특별한 관계"라며 "우리는 폴란드에서 군인을 없앤다는 생각조차 결코 한 적 없으며 다른 나라들에 대해선 이를 생각하고 있다"고 밝혔다.

현재 트럼프 행정부는 변화한 안보 환경에 맞춰 전세계 주둔 중인 미군 배치 조정 방안을 검토 중인 가운데 폴란드엔 미군 약 1만여명, 한국 경우 주한미군 약 2만8천500여명이 주둔 중이다.
나브로츠키 대통령은 "폴란드가 나토 다른 유럽 국가와 달리 무임 승차 않는다"며 "국방비를 국내총생산(GDP) 4.7%로 늘렸고, 나토의 5% 목표도 달성하겠다"고 했다.
