경주시는 지난 2월 국토교통부 ‘자율주행시범운행지구 서비스 지원사업’ 공모에 선정된 뒤 7월부터 시험운행을 거쳐 이번 정식 운행에 들어갔다.
본격적인 서비스에 앞서 경주엑스포대공원에서 열린 시승행사에는 주낙영 경주시장을 비롯해 시의회, 지역 기관·단체 주요 인사들이 참석해 자율주행차를 직접 체험했다. 참석자들은 보문호 주변을 순환하며 ▲AI 기반 주행 시스템 ▲실시간 센서 인식 기술 ▲정류장 자동 정차 기능 등 첨단 기술을 확인했다.
정식 운행 차량은 19인승 A형 1대(KGC 090)와 8인승 B형 2대(ROii) 등 총 3대로, 오는 12월 31일까지 화요일부터 토요일까지 주 5일, 하루 7회씩 운행된다. 시민과 관광객 누구나 무료로 이용할 수 있으며, 경주시 교통정보센터 웹사이트를 통해 사전 예약하거나 현장 잔여 좌석이 있을 경우 바로 탑승할 수 있다. 승강장 안내판과 QR코드를 통해 탑승 정보를 확인할 수 있고, 카카오맵과 교통정보센터 웹을 통해 실시간 위치도 조회 가능하다.

The buses will operate seven times a day, five days a week, from Tuesday to Saturday, until December 31st. Both citizens and tourists can use the free service. The operation was handled by Autonomous A2Z, a company specializing in autonomous driving. Ranked 11th globally in Guidehouse's "2024 Autonomous Driving Leaderboard," Autonomous A2Z is Korea's only full-stack autonomous driving technology company. Notably, the Type B vehicle being deployed is Korea's first Level 4 platform, boasting a 96% domestic production rate. The company is continuing development, aiming for commercialization by 2027.
Building on this pilot operation, Gyeongju City plans to introduce autonomous shuttles for the 2025 APEC Summit. The plan is to provide leaders and attendees from major countries with firsthand experience of cutting-edge mobility services, showcasing a future transportation model befitting an international event.
Gyeongju Mayor Joo Nak-young stated, "By providing citizens and tourists with opportunities to experience autonomous vehicles, we will use this as an opportunity to transform Gyeongju from a historical and cultural city into a smart tourism destination."
