브레이크뉴스 문홍철 기자= 정의선 현대자동차그룹 회장이 미국 조지아주 배터리 공장에서 발생한 대규모 이민 단속 사태와 관련해 처음으로 공식 입장을 밝혔다.
현대차 측에 따르면 정의선 회장은 11일(현지시간) 디트로이트에서 열린 미국 자동차 매체 행사에서 “이번 사태는 매우 유감스럽다”며 “수백 명이 구금됐다가 본국으로 송환되는 상황을 그룹 차원에서 심각하게 받아들이고 있다”고 밝혔다.
이는 사건 발생 이후 현대차 최고경영진이 직접 밝힌 첫 공식 발언이다.
정 회장은 “한국과 미국 정부가 긴밀히 협력 중”이라며 “이민 관련 규정은 매우 복잡하고, 더 나은 제도를 만들어낼 수 있을 것”이라고 했다.

앞서 미 국토안보부는 지난 4일 조지아주에 위치한 현대차와 LG에너지솔루션 합작 배터리 공장 건설 현장을 급습해 불법 고용 혐의로 475명을 구금했다. 이 과정에서 한국인과 일본인 근로자가 포함되면서 사태는 외교 현안으로 비화했고, 한국 외교부 장관이 긴급 방미해 협의에 나서기도 했다.
