【브레이크뉴스 영덕】박영재 기자=영덕군은 8일부터 12일(현지 시각)까지 칠레 테무코에서 열린 제11회 세계지질공원네트워크(GGN) 총회에서 경북동해안지질공원이 ‘유네스코 세계지질공원 정회원 인증서(Certificate of Membership)’를 수여받았다고 12일 밝혔다.

인증서 수여식은 지난 10일 밤(한국시간 11일 오전) 전 세계 70여 개국 1,000여 명의 대표단이 참석한 가운데 진행됐다. 경북동해안지질공원 대표단은 이번 총회에서 탐방 프로그램, 주민 참여 활동, 지질 유산 보전 사례 등을 발표해 국제사회의 주목을 받았다. 특히 해맞이공원, 죽도산, 고래불해안, 철암산 화석 산지 등 영덕군 내 11개 지질 명소의 가치를 세계 무대에 알리는 계기가 됐다.
이번 인증으로 경북동해안지질공원은 지난 4월 파리 유네스코 본부 집행이사회에서 세계지질공원으로 공식 지정된 데 이어, 세계지질공원 공동체의 정회원 자격을 공식적으로 확인받았다. 지정서는 국제적 효력을 가진 공식 문서라면, 이번 인증서는 세계지질공원 공동체가 영덕군을 비롯한 경북 동해안을 환영하고 연대한다는 상징적 의미를 담고 있다.
유네스코 세계지질공원 제도는 지질학적 가치뿐만 아니라 생태·역사·문화 자원과의 연계, 지역사회 협력, 지속 가능한 관리 체계를 종합적으로 평가해 지정한다. 또한 4년마다 재검증을 받아야 자격이 유지된다.
영덕군은 이번 성과를 기반으로 지질 명소와 명품 해안 트레킹 코스인 블루로드를 연계한 생태체험 프로그램 확대, 탐방로와 편의시설 보강, 주민과 함께하는 지질관광 활성화 등을 추진해 지역 발전의 발판으로 삼을 계획이다.
김광열 영덕군수는 “이번 인증서 수여는 영덕군이 세계지질공원 공동체의 당당한 일원임을 알리는 계기”라며 “앞으로도 군민과 함께 소중한 지질 유산을 보전하고, 세계 수준의 교육·관광이 지속 가능하게 이루어지도록 최선을 다하겠다”고 말했다.

Yeongdeok County Receives UNESCO Global Geoparks Community Membership
Yeongdeok County announced on the 12th that the Gyeongbuk East Coast Geopark received its UNESCO Global Geoparks Membership Certificate at the 11th General Assembly of the Global Geoparks Network (GGN), held in Temuco, Chile from the 8th to the 12th (local time).

With this certification, the Gyeongbuk East Coast Geopark has officially been designated a Global Geopark by the UNESCO Executive Board at Paris headquarters in April, and its status as a full member of the Global Geoparks Community has been confirmed. While the designation is an official document with international validity, this certification symbolically signifies the Global Geoparks Community's welcome and solidarity with Yeongdeok County and the East Coast of Gyeongbuk.
The UNESCO Global Geoparks system comprehensively evaluates not only geological value but also its connection to ecological, historical, and cultural resources, community cooperation, and sustainable management systems. Furthermore, revalidation is required every four years to maintain its status.
Yeongdeok County plans to build on this achievement by expanding ecological experience programs that link geological sites with the prestigious coastal trekking course, the Blue Road, improving trails and facilities, and promoting geotourism for residents. This will serve as a springboard for regional development.
Yeongdeok County Governor Kim Gwang-yeol said, “This certificate awarding is an opportunity to show that Yeongdeok County is a proud member of the Global Geopark community,” and added, “We will continue to do our best to preserve our precious geological heritage together with the people of the county and to ensure that world-class education and tourism are sustainable.”
