인증서 수여식은 총회 기간 중인 10일 밤(한국 시간 11일 오전) 전 세계 70여 개국 1,000여 명의 대표단이 지켜보는 가운데 진행됐다.
경북 동해안 지질공원은 지난 4월 파리 유네스코 집행이사회에서 세계지질공원으로 지정된 바 있으며, 이번 총회에서 GGN 정회원 자격을 상징하는 인증서를 받음으로써 세계 지질공원 공동체의 당당한 일원임을 공식적으로 인정받았다. 지정서가 국제적 효력을 가진 공식 문서라면, 이번 인증서는 국제사회가 경북 동해안을 환영하고 연대한다는 의미를 담고 있다.

경북 동해안 지질공원은 한반도 최대 신생대 화석 산지와 동아시아 지체구조 형성, 화성활동 흔적 등 다양한 지질경관을 보유하고 있다. 경주에서는 남산 화강암, 골굴암, 문무대왕릉, 양남 주상절리 등 4곳이 포함돼 있다.
경북 동해안 국가지질공원은 울진, 영덕, 포항, 경주 4개 지역에 걸쳐 있으며, 총면적 2,693.69㎢로 국내 최대 규모를 자랑한다. 대표 지질 명소는 경주 양남주상절리를 비롯한 총 29개소다.
김홍근 경주시 환경정책과장은 “이번 인증서 수여는 경주의 국제적 위상을 높이는 성과이자, 세계지질공원 공동체의 정식 일원으로 자리매김했음을 의미한다”며 “앞으로 지질관광자원과 문화유산을 연계해 세계적인 관광도시로 발전시켜 나가겠다”고 밝혔다.

Gyeongju includes four sites: Namsan Granite, Golgul Rock, King Munmu's Tomb, and Yangnam Columnar Joints.
The Gyeongbuk East Coast National Geopark spans four regions: Uljin, Yeongdeok, Pohang, and Gyeongju, and with a total area of 2,693.69㎢, it boasts the largest area in Korea. There are a total of 29 representative geological sites, including the Yangnam Columnar Joints in Gyeongju.
Kim Hong-geun, Director of the Environmental Policy Division of Gyeongju City, stated, "This certification elevates Gyeongju's international standing and signifies its official position as a member of the Global Geoparks community.
