이재명 대통령이 22일(현지시간) 미국 뉴욕 한인 동포들과 만나 "전 세계 어디 있든 대한민국 주인으로서 권력을 제대로 행사할 수 있도록 투표제도 개선도 확실히 해내도록 하겠다"고 밝혔다.
제80차 유엔총회 참석차 뉴욕을 방문한 이 대통령은 이날 오후(현지시간) 맨해튼 소재 지그펠트 볼룸에서 열린 한인 동포간담회에서 "투표하기 왜 이렇게 어렵냐고 말씀들 많이 하신다"며 "말로는 국민이 주인이라는데 주인 노릇할 기회를 안 주는 건 정말 문제"라며 이같이 말했다.
그러면서 "재외 국민들이 대한민국 국민임을 자랑스럽게 당당하게 말할 수 있는 그런 대한민국을 꼭 만들도록 하겠다"며 "자랑스러운 대한민국을 꼭 만들겠다"고 밝혔다.
또 "원래 조국이 해외에 나가 있는 국민들을 걱정해야 하는데 재외 국민들이 본국을 걱정하는 일이 꽤 오랫동안 있었던 것 같다"며 "이젠 대한민국이 여러분을 생각하고 걱정하겠다"고 했다.
이어 "전 세계가 잠시 걱정했지만 대한민국은 아주 모범적 민주 국가·문화 강국·군사·경제 강국으로 다시 돌아왔다"며 "이제 정상으로 돌아와 다시 도약할 때가 됐다"고 했다.
이명석 뉴욕한인회장은 "뉴욕에서 이기는 건 곧 그 분야에서 세계 1등 하는 것과 마찬가지"라며 "50만 동포 사회가 그 경쟁에서 이길 수 있도록 적극 도와주시고 특히 차세대 인재 발굴·지원에 최선을 다해달라"고 요청했다.
