브레이크뉴스 문홍철 기자= 효성이 국립수목원, 대한민국 육군과 DMZ(비무장지대) 산림 훼손지 복원에 나섰다.
효성은 지난 23일 강원도 양구군 민통선 내 6·25 전사자 유해 발굴지에서 ‘DMZ 산림 훼손지 복원 행사’를 열었다고 24일 밝혔다.
이날 행사에는 이건종 효성화학㈜ 대표, 임영석 국립수목원장, 남진오 육군 제21사단장, 서흥원 양구군수 등 주요 인사와 ㈜효성, 효성화학㈜, 효성티앤씨㈜, 효성중공업㈜ 의 임직원 20여 명이 참여했다.
이번 행사는 지난해 9월 효성화학이 국립수목원과 ‘DMZ 산림생태계 복원 및 생물다양성 보존 MOU’를 체결한 후, 그룹 차원으로 활동을 확대해 추진한 첫 실행 사업이다.
참여자들은 양구수목원에서 DMZ 생태계의 가치를 배우고, 식재 현장에서는 김의털, 꿀풀, 기린초 등 7종의 토종 자생식물 약 2만4500본을 유해 발굴로 훼손된 600㎡ 부지에 심으며 복원 활동에 힘을 보탰다.
양구군은 휴전선 최북단의 6·25 전쟁 당시 최대 격전지로, ‘한반도의 배꼽’이라 불릴 만큼 전략적 요충지다. 현재는 안보와 생태가 공존하는 공간으로, 이번 식재 활동은 유해 발굴로 훼손된 땅을 회복하고 DMZ의 생태적 가치를 지키는 상징적 의미를 지닌다.
이건종 효성화학 대표는 “DMZ는 전쟁의 아픔과 동시에 자연의 가치를 간직한 공간으로, 이번 행사에 효성이 함께하게 돼 뜻깊다”며 “앞으로도 DMZ 지역 생태계 보전을 위해 다양한 활동을 실시할 것이다”고 말했다.
한편, 효성은 △멸종위기종 비단벌레 자연 방사 △해양 잘피 숲 조성 △멸종위기 철새 먹이 지원 등 다양한 생태 보전 활동을 펼치고 있다.
