도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 28일(현지시간) 가자 지구 전쟁 관련해 "우리는 중동에서 위대함을 이룰 진정한 기회가 있다"며 "사상 최초로 모두 특별한 일을 위해 한마음으로 뭉쳤다"고 밝혔다.
영국 '로이터 통신'에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 이날 자신의 트루스소셜을 통해 이같이 전한 후 "우리는 반드시 해낼 것"이라며 중동 정세 관련해 낙관적 전망을 드러냈다.
또 이날 '로이터' 전화 인터뷰에서 가자 지구 전쟁 종식을 위한 평화 협정 제안 관련해선 "이스라엘·아랍 국가 지도자들로부터 매우 긍정적 반응을 얻었다"며 "(해당 제안은) 가자뿐만 아닌 중동 평화 확대를 목표로 한다"고 밝혔다.
더불어 지난 26일(현지시간) 자신의 트루스소셜에도 "가자 지구 문제 관해 중동 공동체와 매우 고무적이고 생산적 논의가 진행되고 있다는 기쁜 소식을 전한다. 가자 전쟁 종식을 위한 합의가 막바지에 이르렀다"며 "가자 지구 문제를 놓고 중동 국가들과 치열히 논의하고 있고 하마스도 이를 인지하고 있다"고 밝힌 바 있다.
트럼프 대통령은 오는 29일(현지시간) 워싱톤 DC 백악관에서 베냐민 네타냐후 이스라엘 총리와 만나 협상 틀 마련을 목표로 한 회담을 갖는다.

최근 트럼프 대통령은 이스라엘·팔레스타인 무장정파 하마스 간 합의가 가까워졌다고 언급해온 가운데 지난 23일(현지시간) 미국 뉴욕 제80차 유엔총회 계기 카타르·요르단·튀르키예·파키스탄·인도네시아이집트·아랍에미리트(UAE)·사우디아라비아 지도자와 회동한 바 있다.
