NeoAI Cloud는 지난 6월 포항시와 업무협약(MOU)을 체결한 이후 지속적으로 협력해온 기업으로, 이번 확정으로 포항은 대한민국 AI 산업 전환을 선도하는 핵심 거점으로 자리매김하게 됐다.
이번 유치는 포항이 추진해온 글로벌 AI데이터센터 유치, 육·양국 연계 데이터센터 구축, 애플 R&D 지원센터 유치 등 선제적 전략의 결실로 평가된다. 시는 인재와 산업 인프라를 결집해 글로벌 AI도시 기반을 착실히 다져온 만큼, 이번 확정이 지역경제와 산업구조 전반에 큰 변화를 불러올 것으로 기대하고 있다.
포항이 최종 입지로 선정된 배경에는 도시가 가진 독보적인 경쟁력이 자리하고 있다. 철강·이차전지 등 국가 주력산업의 방대한 수요, 포스텍·한동대를 중심으로 한 핵심 인재, 방사광가속기·극저온 전자현미경·로봇융합연구원 등 세계적 연구개발 인프라, 그리고 울진 원전과 연계된 안정적 전력공급 등 데이터센터 운영에 필요한 최적의 조건을 두루 갖췄다는 평가다.
AI데이터센터 건립은 단순한 인프라 확충을 넘어, 포항과 대한민국 전반에 걸쳐 막대한 경제적 파급효과를 가져올 전망이다. 수조 원 규모의 투자가 이뤄지며 건설·장비·운영 등 연관 산업이 활성화되고, 데이터센터 운영·보안·개발 분야의 신규 일자리가 창출될 것으로 예상된다. 또한 AI 기술이 철강, 이차전지, 바이오 등 기존 산업과 융합되면서 스마트제조, 신소재 개발, 신약 연구 등 새로운 성장동력이 확보될 전망이다.

향후 포항시는 AI데이터센터를 중심으로 산업·경제·사회 전반에 걸친 전주기 AI혁신 생태계를 완성하고, 국가 혁신을 주도하는 ‘AI 고속도로 모델’을 구축한다는 전략이다.
이강덕 포항시장은 “오픈AI와 NeoAI Cloud의 글로벌 AI데이터센터 유치는 대한민국이 AI 초강국으로 도약하는 신호탄”이라며 “세계적 수준의 데이터센터가 신속히 건립될 수 있도록 모든 행정 역량을 집중하고, 이를 통해 대한민국이 AI G3 강국으로 도약하는 역사적 전환점을 만들어 가겠다”고 밝혔다.
