서울시 강남구 역삼동에 위치한 갤러리 포엠(서울시 강남구 선릉로 565 한국빌딩 1층. 전시기간:2025.10.1.-31, 관람시간:10시부터 20시까지)에서 제4회 우주파(Korean Cosmos Artist) 정기전을 개최하고 있는 우주파 회장 하정열 우주화가를 만나 대한민국 우주파에 대해 알아보고, 이번 전시회의 특징에 대해 대담(서면)을 나누었다.
-우주파는 무슨 단체이고, 창립의 의미는?
▲우주파는 대한민국에서 우주를 주제로 다양한 소재를 활용하여 작품을 하는 작가들이 모여 2025년에 만든 미술 계보이다. 미술의 사조는 사상의 시대적 흐름으로 시대적인 상황과 분위기에 따라 시대정신을 창의적으로 구현하는 것이라고 생각한다. 즉 바르비종파, 인상파, 입체파, 야수파, 초현실주의, 추상주의 등이 대표적인 그룹이라 할 수 있을 것이다.
지금까지 인류의 예술활동은 통상 지구에 존재하는 모든 사물과 지구에서 바라볼 수 있는 하늘을 대상으로 했다. 즉 인간의 삶과 자연의 변화, 눈으로 볼 수 있는 별이 그 대상이었다. 그러나 지금 우리는 우주 시대를 살고 있다. 따라서 지금까지 다른 작가들이 엄두를 못 내고 있는 우주를 대상으로 작품을 해보자는 취지로 우주파를 창립했다.
-이번 제4회 우주파 전시회의 특징과 의미는?
▲이번 전시는 우주파 작가들의 제4회 전시로, 10월 1일부터 31일까지 한 달 동안 선정릉역 근처에 있는 갤러리 포엠(포에트리)에서 초대전 형식으로 진행되고 있다. 시인 겸 화가인 박정이 대표가 특별히 기획한 초대전이다. 개인당 3점을 출품하여, ‘대한민국 우주파 작가의 우주(COSMOS)’라는 명제를 부쳐 창의적인 전시를 개최하고 있다.
이번 제4회 전시회는 세 가지 의미를 담아 기획하였다. 첫째, 이번 전시회를 통해 우주파 창립 원년의 활동을 마무리하고 싶다. 둘째, 관람객들에게 우주파 작가들은 소개하고 작품을 선보이고 싶다. 셋째, 앞으로 우주파 작가로서 활동영역을 넓히는 자리를 만들고 싶다.

-이번 전시에 참여한 작가들과 그 특징은?
▲우주파는 동서양의 사상과 물질을 융합하여 우주의 아름다움과 변화를 다양한 소재를 이용하여 조화롭게 표현하는 통섭의 독창적인 우주작가 9명이 모인 작가집단이다.
강숙희 작가는 작업에 몰입하는 그 순간이 바로 우주임을 깨닫고, 캔버스에 아크릴로 우주의 변화를 독창적으로 표현한다. 공병 작가는 크리스탈 아티스트로서 두꺼운 투명 아크릴판에 빛을 활용해 생명을 불어넣는 채움과 비움을 표현한다. 김연식 작가는 우주를 찰나의 인연이 그리는 끝없는 그물로 보고 이를 조형하거나, 평면 미술로 구현한다. 김월수 작가는 시, 서, 화 삼절의 꿈을 추구하는 작가로 다양한 미디어를 활용하여 우주의 눈동자 등 우주의 특별한 현상을 표현한다. 김정택 작가는 자연의 돌과 나무의 문양 속에서 우주의 근본을 찾으며, 나무와 돌에 문자추상화를 조각한다. 원종현 작가는 광할한 우주 속에 우주만물이 활동하는 원초적인 아름다움을 캔버스에 표현한다. 윤시현 작가는 영겁의 시간 속에 우주의 삼라만상이 연주하는 하모니를 혼합 매체(Mixed Media)로 표현한다. 혜라 작가는 광활한 우주 속 푸른 지구의 모습 등 원초적인 아름다움을 세라믹을 활용하여 표현한다. 하정열 작가는 동서양의 사상과 물질을 융복합해 주로 특별 맞춤 한지에 먹과 유채로 우주의 삼라만상을 표현한다. 작가의 연령대는 40대에서 70대까지 골고루 참여하고 있다. 앞으로 30-40대 젊은 여성 작가 한 분을 더 영입하여 당분간 10명이 함께 활동할 예정이다.
-앞으로 지향하는 목표는?
▲대한민국이 많은 예술 분야에서 세계에 영향을 주며 한류가 대세가 되고 있다. 즉 예술문화 선진국 대열에 합류하고 있다. 그러나 지금도 미술 분야는 뒤따라 가고 있다. 우리의 목표는 세계적인 우주파 작가들이 되어 미래의 미술사조에 일조하며, 인류의 문화발전에 기여하는 것이다.
이를 위해 우주파 작가들은 우주시대의 ‘시대정신(Zeitgeist)’인 ‘도전’, ‘개척’, ‘사랑’, ‘융합’을 예술로 승화시키기 위해 우주를 주제로 작품활동을 지속할 계획이다. 인간의 꿈과 희망이 우주와 긍정적으로 융복합하는 모습을 작품을 통해 표현하려고 노력하면서, 세계적인 우주파 작가들이 되려고 미래를 향해 전진할 것이다.
-대한민국 우주파의 특성은?
▲우리는 동양의 태극, 음양, 오행과 천지인(天地人) 합일사상을 서양의 기독교 및 인본주의 사상과 융합하려고 노력한다. 우리는 다양한 물질과 소재를 융복합하여 작품을 만든다. 한지, 캔버스, 목재, 아크릴 등을 융복합하면 서로 조화되어 숙성된 감칠맛이 있고, 무변 광대한 우주의 삼라만상을 표현하는데 도움이 된다.
-우주파의 지난 전시 일정은?
▲2024년에 우주를 주제로 작품을 하는 작가들이 모여 우주파를 만들어 함께 활동해보자고 의견을 모으고, 금년 3월에 창립기념전을 했다. 그 후 6월에는 제32회 한국미술국제대전에 함께 참여했고, 7월에는 오사카 엑스포 기념으로 열리는 오사카 아시아 아트페어 부스전에 참여했다.
-우주파 작가들의 향후 활동은?
▲앞으로 지구에서의 삶이 더욱 팍팍해질수록 우주를 향한 인류의 꿈은 더욱 구체화되고, 희망은 더욱 현실화된다고 생각한다. 우주파 작가들은 우주와 인간의 꿈과 희망이 긍정적으로 융합하는 모습을 작품을 통해 표현하려고 노력할 것이다.
무변 광대한 우주도 우리 인간에게 하고 싶은 이야기가 많을 것이다. 우리 인간은 아주 원시시대부터 이를 보고 들으며 시와 그림으로 표현했다. 따라서 시와 그림은 인간의 역사가 지속되는 동안 우주와의 소통수단이었다. 시는 우주의 소리요, 그림은 우주의 형체다. 즉 시와 그림은 결국 우주의 다른 표현이다. 시는 형체가 없는 우주이고, 그림은 형체가 있는 우주다. 그림은 말 없는 우주이고, 시는 말하는 우주다.
