도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 17일(현지시간) 미·중 무역 협상 관련해 "미국이 매우 강력한 위치에 있다 생각하며 중국은 약 157% 관세를 원치 않을 것"이라고 밝혔다.
영국 'BBC' 등에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 이날 워싱톤 DC 백악관에서 열린 볼로디미르 젤렌스키 우크라이나 대통령과의 정상 회담 중 취재진의 미·중 간 상호 관세 무역 협상 관련 질의에 이같이 답했다.
앞서 트럼프 대통령은 중국의 대미 희토류 수출 통제 조치에 "중국 입장 변화가 없다면 오는 11월 1일부터 미국으로 들어오는 중국산 제품에 100% 추가 관세를 부과하겠다"고 예고한 바 있다.
그러면서 "11월 1일부터 내가 원한다면 지금 받는 것에 더해 100% 추가 관세를 부과할 수 있다"며 "그러면 그건(대 중국 관세) 약 157%가 될 것이며 중국은 그것을 원치 않는다"고 했다.
또 "그래서 그들은 대화를 원하며 우리는 대화하고 있다"며 "우리는 양측 모두에 좋은 합의를 이룰 수 있을 것"이라고 했다.
이어 "우리는 중국과 잘 지내고 있으며 시(진핑 중국) 주석과 매우 좋은 관계를 갖고 있다"며 "우리는 몇 주 후 한국서 만날 것"이라고 밝혔다.
더불어 "여러분이 알아야 할 건 우리가 중국으로부터 아무것도 얻지 못했다는 것"이라며 "수 십 년 간 일방통행이었으며 그들은 미국 덕분에 부유하게 됐다"고 했다.
트럼프 대통령은 "우리는 중국으로부터 아주 심하게 이용당했다"며 "매년 중국에 수천억 달러를 잃었으며 생각해보면 우리가 그들 군대를 키워준 셈"이라고 했다.
그러면서 "우리는 더 이상 어리석지 않으며 그건 EU(유럽연합)·일본·한국도 포함된다"며 "이들 나라에서 우리나라가 바라는 건 공정히 대우받는 것"이라고 했다.
이어 "공정하게란 건 미국으로 수천억 심지어 조 단위 달러가 들어오는 걸 의미한다"며 "우리 국가 안보는 관세 덕분에 굳건하며 관세가 없었다면 국가 안보도 없었을 것"이라고 강조했다.
한편 트럼프 대통령은 '우크라에 대한 토마호크 지원이 블라디미르 푸틴 러시아 대통령을 협상 테이블로 이끌 수 있는가'란 취재진 질의에 "(푸틴 입장에선) 긴장을 더 고조시키려는 행위로 인식될 수 있다"며 "(토마호크 지원 시) 나쁜 일들이 많이 일어날 수 있으며 미국도 토마호크가 필요하고, 우리나라를 보호하는 데 필요한 것들을 포기하고 싶지 않다"고 밝혔다.
젤렌스키 대통령은 모스크바를 비롯 러시아 내부를 타격할 수 있는 사거리 2500㎞에 달하는 장거리 순항 미사일 토마호크 지원을 미국에 요청해 왔다.

He added, "We're not stupid anymore, and that includes the EU, Japan, and South Korea. What we want from these countries is to be treated fairly."
He continued, "Fairly means hundreds of billions, even trillions, of dollars coming to the United States. Our national security is solidified by tariffs, and without them, we wouldn't have national security."
Meanwhile, when asked by reporters whether providing Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine could bring Russian President Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table, President Trump responded, "(From Putin's perspective) it could be perceived as an attempt to further escalate tensions." He added, "A lot of bad things could happen (with Tomahawk missiles), and the United States needs Tomahawk missiles, and we don't want to give up what we need to protect our country."
President Zelenskyy has requested the United States to provide Tomahawk missiles, long-range cruise missiles with a range of 2,500 kilometers, capable of striking Moscow and other areas within Russia.
