도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 21일(현지시간) 미·중 무역 협상 관련해 "시진핑 중국 국가주석과 한국서 만나 많은 것을 얘기할 것이며 협상을 잘할 거라 생각한다"고 거듭 밝혔다.
미 'CNN'에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 이날 워싱턴 DC 백악관 로즈가든에서 열린 공화당 상원의원 초청 오찬에서 이같이 말한 후 "우리는 일본·한국·유럽과도 (협상) 잘했다"며 "관세가 없었다면 그런 합의를 할 수 없었을 것"이라고 했다.
그러면서 "나는 시 주석과 좋은 관계를 유지하고 있으며 그와 공정한 합의를 할 수 있으리라 기대한다"며 "시 주석과 좋은 합의를 하고 싶고, 시 주석이 중국을 위해 좋은 합의를 하길 바라지만 그 합의는 공정해야 한다"고 강조했다.
또 "우리가 매우 성공적 회담을 하게 될 거고 분명 많은 사람이 그 회담을 기다리고 있다"며 "혹시 회담이 열리지 않을 수도 있고, 누군가 '만나고 싶지 않다. (상황이) 너무 험악하다' 말할 수도 있지만 험악한 게 아닌 단지 비즈니스일 뿐"이라고 했다.
이어 "미 국민 전체를 대표해 훌륭하게 협상할 것"이라며 "관세는 국가안보이자 국부"라고 했다.
더불어 "우리는 관세를 통해 수천억불을 확보했다"며 "그 돈은 예전에 우리로부터 그걸 빼앗아 가던 나라들로부터 들어온 것"이라고 했다.
트럼프 대통령은 앞둔 연방대법원의 관세 부과 적법성 심리 관련해선 "법적 근거에 비춰볼 때 우리가 승리해야 하며 지금까지 내가 말한 이유를 보더라도 반드시 승리해야 한다"고 했다.
또 4주차에 접어든 민주당 성향 연방 정부의 '셧 다운(일시적 업무 정지)' 사태에 대해 "척 슈머(민주당 상원 원내대표)·민주당 의원들은 이 깨끗하고 초당적 단기지출법안(임시예산안·CR)에 찬성하고 정부를 다시 열어야 한다"며 "그들은 방해꾼이다. 우리가 너무 잘하고 있기 때문에 저러는 것으로 모든 민주당 상원의원에 이 광기를 멈추라고 촉구한다"고 했다.
이어 "그들에게 현명해지라 말하고 싶고, 지금 하는 방식은 통하지 않는다"며 "(민주당은) 여론조사에서 완패 중이다. 국민들은 그들이 무엇을 하고 있는지 알고 있으며 그건 잘못된 일"이라고 강조했다.

Regarding the Democratic-led federal government shutdown, now in its fourth week, he said, "Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and the Democrats must vote for this clean, bipartisan short-term spending bill and reopen the government. They are obstructionists. They're doing so because we're doing so well. I urge all Democratic senators to stop this madness."
He continued, "I want to tell them to be smart. The way they're doing it isn't working. They're losing in the polls. The people know what they're doing, and it's wrong."
