양 대학은 지난 13일부터 14일까지(현지시간) 시카고대학교에서 ‘UChicago-POSTECH 공동 심포지엄(UChicago-POSTECH Joint Symposium)’을 개최했다.
이번 심포지엄에는 두 대학의 연구자 20여 명이 참석해 ▲합성생물학(Synthetic Biology) ▲이차원 소재(2D Materials and Physics) ▲생체의공학(Biomedical Technology) 등을 주제로 연구 성과를 공유하고 심도 있는 토론을 이어갔다. 또한 연구실 방문과 교류 만찬 등을 통해 연구자 간 협력 네트워크를 공고히 했다.
14일 오후 열린 총장단 회의(Presidents’ Meeting)에서는 김성근 POSTECH 총장과 폴 알리비사토스(Paul Alivisatos) 시카고대 총장이 참석해 학술·인적 교류 확대와 공동 연구 프로젝트 추진 방안 등을 논의했다. 양측은 향후 다양한 분야에서의 협력 가능성을 모색하고, 지속적이고 실질적인 교류를 이어가기로 뜻을 모았다.
POSTECH 관계자는 “이번 심포지엄은 세계적 연구 중심 대학과의 협력을 통해 글로벌 연구 네트워크를 확장하는 중요한 계기가 됐다”며 “앞으로 페르미연구소(Fermilab) 등 미국 주요 연구기관과의 신규 협력도 추진해 입자물리학 및 첨단 연구 분야 경쟁력을 강화할 계획”이라고 밝혔다.

POSTECH and University of Chicago Hold Joint Symposium to Strengthen Global Research Cooperation
POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology) and the University of Chicago (UChicago) have joined forces to expand academic exchanges and strengthen joint research collaboration.
From the 13th to the 14th (local time), the two universities held the "UChicago-POSTECH Joint Symposium" at the University of Chicago.
Approximately 20 researchers from both universities attended the symposium, sharing research findings and engaging in in-depth discussions on topics such as synthetic biology, 2D materials and physics, and biomedical technology. At the Presidents' Meeting held on the afternoon of the 14th, POSTECH President Kim Sung-keun and University of Chicago President Paul Alivisatos discussed expanding academic and personnel exchanges and promoting joint research projects. Both sides agreed to explore future collaborations in various fields and to continue ongoing, substantive exchanges.
A POSTECH official stated, "This symposium served as a significant opportunity to expand our global research network through collaboration with world-class research-oriented universities.
