이 의원은 “2015년부터 2023년까지 대구 청년 인구는 17.1% 감소해 전국 평균 12%를 크게 웃돌았다”며 “특히 지난해에는 8천 명의 청년이 낮은 임금과 일자리 부족으로 수도권으로 떠났다”고 밝혔다. 대구의 고용률은 2025년 기준 57.3%로, 전년 대비 0.5% 하락했다.
청년 정책 예산 역시 부족하다는 지적이 나왔다. 대구의 청년 관련 예산은 144억 원으로 6개 광역시 중 최하위 수준이며, 울산보다 15억 원, 부산과 광주보다 각각 530억 원, 450억 원 적다. 이 의원은 “대구가 청년들에게 인색한 정책을 펴고 있다”고 비판했다.
대구시의 전시성·낭비성 예산 집행 사례도 문제로 언급됐다. 신천 프로포즈 조성 사업(143억 원), 박정희 동상 건립 사업(10억 원), 금호 꽃섬 정원 박람회(15억 원) 등이 사례로 지적됐다. 일부 사업은 원상 복구 과정에서 예산이 낭비됐으며, 보조금 반납 규모도 2023년 55억 원, 2024년 40억 원에 달했다.
이 의원은 “예산을 확보하고도 집행하지 않는 관행이 남아 있다”며 기획과 집행 능력 부족을 꼬집었다. 이어 “청년 문제 해결을 위해 보다 실질적이고 적극적인 정책이 필요하다”고 강조했다.
대구시가 청년과의 소통을 통한 문제 해결 의지를 밝힌 것에 대해서도 이 의원은 “정치적 이해관계에 따라 청년 정책이 휘둘려서는 안 된다”며 “청년들이 더 나은 환경에서 살 수 있도록 정책 역량을 강화해야 한다”고 말했다.
