브레이크뉴스 최애리 기자= 현대백화점은 민간기업 최초로 ‘백두대간 글로벌 시드볼트’에 울릉도와 독도에서 수집한 자생식물 종자 35종을 기탁했다고 28일 밝혔다.
시드볼트는 자연재해·전쟁 등 지구적 재난으로부터 야생 식물 유전자원을 안전하게 보전하기 위해 2015년 경상북도 봉화군 국립백두대간수목원에 설립된 국가 시설로, 전 세계 유일의 야생 식물 종자 영구 저장소다. 민간기업이 울릉도·독도에서만 서식하는 자생식물 종자를 기탁한 것은 이번이 처음이다.
앞서 현대백화점은 지난 3월 시드볼트를 운영하는 한국수목원정원관리원과 경북대학교 울릉도·독도 연구소와 함께 생물다양성 보전을 위한 업무협약을 체결하고, 향후 5년간 울릉도·독도 자생식물 100종 이상의 종자를 확보하기로 했다.
이후 대백화점은 지난 7개월간 협약 기관들과 함께 울릉도·독도 일대 자생식물의 서식지를 조사하고, 수집 가능한 종자 데이터를 확보해 왔다.
특히, ‘우산마가목’이라는 식물 종자는 이번에 처음으로 시드볼트에 기탁됐고, 섬남성·울릉장구채·섬기린초 등 9종의 특산식물과 고유종도 함께 확보돼 사업 첫해부터 계획을 상회하는 유의미한 성과를 거뒀다고 현대백화점은 설명했다.
양명성 현대백화점 영업전략담당 상무는 “급격한 기후변화에 맞서 보전 가치가 높은 울릉도·독도 지역의 환경을 지키는 데 조금이나마 도움이 되길 바란다”며 “앞으로도 미래 세대를 위한 친환경 가치 확산에 기여하는 한편, 고객과 함께 탄소중립 실천에도 적극 앞장서겠다”고 말했다.

Nine endemic and indigenous species, including the island's namseong (Korean ginseng), Ulleung Jangguchae (Korean jangguchae), and island's giraffe, have also been secured, achieving significant results that exceeded initial expectations from the project's first year, Hyundai Department Store explained.
