도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 29일 "현재 외교적 초점은 중국과의 무역 협상에 맞춰져 있으나 언젠가 북한 문제에 관여하겠다"고 밝혔다.
영국 '로이터 통신'에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 이날 경주 APEC(아시아태평양경제협력체) 정상회의 참석차 한국으로 향하는 미 대통령 전용기 에어포스 원 기내에서 "머지않은 미래에 동북아 지역으로 돌아와 김정은 북한 노동당 총비서와 만날 수도 있다"며 이같이 말했다.
그러면서 '전날 북한의 순항미사일 발사' 관련 취재진 질의에 "그들은 수십 년간 미사일을 쏴 오지 않았느냐"며 "(김 총비서와는) 우리는 서로를 잘 이해했다"고 전했다.
앞서 지난 27일 트럼프 대통령은 "김 총비서가 만나고 싶다면 (나도) 만나고 싶다"면서 필요 시 방한 일정 연장 및 북한 방문이란 생각을 드러낸 바 있다.
트럼프 대통령은 이날 오후 경주에서 이재명 대통령과 양자회담을 갖는 가운데 이미 선행 합의된 한국의 상호 관세 무역 협정 관련 대미 투자금 3500억불(약 497조 7000억) 선불 이행을 둘러싼 합의 여부가 주목된다.
