도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 29일 "한국은 미국의 소중한 친구이자 동맹"이라며 "한국에 오게 돼 정말 기쁘다"고 밝혔다.
트럼프 대통령은 이날 오후 경북 경주 예술의 전당에서 열린 APEC(아시아태평양경제협력체) 정상회의 CEO 서밋 특별 연설에서 "비전을 가진 혁신가·가장 뛰어난 각지에서 오신 분들 앞에 서게 돼 특별한 의미가 있다"며 이같이 말했다.
그러면서 "한국 국민은 경제 기적을 만들었고, 흔치 않은 기술력을 갖고 자유로운 민주주의가 번창하고 문명을 구가하는 국가"라며 "전 세계 어떤 나라도 한국이 달성한 업적·성과를 보며 배울 게 많을 것"이라고 했다.
또 “한국은 아주 중요한 파트너로 우리는 한국과 특별한 관계를 갖고 있다”며 “한국과 반도체·조선 관련 특별한 관계를 갖고 있다”고 밝혔다.
이어 “옛날엔 미국도 배를 많이 만들었고 하루 한 척 건조했는데 이제 그만큼 짓지 못하고 있다”며 “이제 한국이 그런 조선업을 갖고 있으며 (미국은) 한국과 함께 일할 것”이라고 했다.
더불어 "여기 있는 일부 회사(한화그룹)는 필리조선소를 인수했는데 아주 성공적 인수”라고 평했다.
트럼프 대통령은 "한국은 훌륭한 조선 기술로 잘 알려져 있다”며 “필리조선소도 경영 상황이 나빴을 뿐 마찬가지일 거고, 역대 미국 대통령이 조선업을 쇠퇴하게 둔 건 잘못”이라고 했다.
