필자는 지난 52년 간 기자-작가로서 글을 써왔다. 이 기간, 주로-대부분 본명(문일석)으로 글을 썼지만. 몇 개의 필명(筆名)도 곁들였다. 박정대(‘빡세게 정대하게’라는 뜻)-문시림(文詩林-‘시의 수풀’이라는 뜻)이라는 필명을 써왔다. 브레이크뉴스엔 ‘박정대 기자’라는 필명을 주로 썼다.

대부분의 기자나 작가에게는 필명이 있다. 이는, 다른 이름으로 숨어서 글을 쓰는 차원이 아니다. 아동문학가 소파 방정환(1899-1931) 선생은 재세 시 다양한 필명으로 활동했었다.
필자와 친한 지인이신 민윤식 시인(서울시인협회 회장)은 “방정환 선생의 필명은 1910년대부터 1930년대까지 신문과 잡지에서 확인된 필명만 해도 무려 39개에 달한다”고 말했다. “방정환 선생께서 사용한 필명 중에는 'ㅈㅎ생', '목성', '잔물', 'CWP', '북극성', '몽중인', 'SS생', '삼산인', '길동무', '운정', '파영' 등 다채로운 이름들이 있었다”고 피력했다.
왜 이렇게 많은 필명을 사용했을까? 몇 가지 이유가 있었다. 그 이유는 ▲당시 글을 써줄 만한 필자가 부족하여 선생님께서 직접 많은 글을 써야 했기 때문이다. ▲넉넉하지 않은 원고료 문제도 한몫했다. ▲독자들의 궁금증을 유발하여 '소파'라는 인물을 스타로 만드는 일종의 '신비화 전략'을 펼치신 것이기도 하다. ▲일제하에 주로 글을 썼기 때문에 일제의 검열을 피하기 위한 방편도 됐다.
필자의 경우, 비판성(批判性)의 글이나 기사는 무조건 나의 본명(문일석)을 썼다. 내 이름을 앞세우고, 맹렬하게 비판했었다. 필명은 어떤 때 썼나? 내용상 간단하거나 단순할 때, 그러한 글들에 사용했었다. 과거, 숨겨진 이야기 한 토막을 공개한다. 필자가 1980년 후반부 미국 뉴욕의 맨해튼에서 기자-작가생활을 할 때 뉴욕 조선일보에 ‘마이클 르나헨’이라는 필명으로 장기간 글을 연재 했었다.
