장인화 포스코그룹 회장은 30일 경주에서 열린 APEC CEO 서밋 기조연설을 통해 “지난 반세기 동안 포스코가 구축해 온 가치는 지속가능한 미래로 향하는 든든한 기반”이라며 “이번 정상회의의 주제인 ‘우리가 만들어가는 지속가능한 내일(Building a Sustainable Tomorrow)’은 포스코의 경영철학과 맞닿아 있다”고 밝혔다.
장인화 회장은 특히 “이재명 대통령이 개막식에서 강조한 ‘공급망 협력’은 아태 지역의 신뢰 회복과 공동 번영을 위한 핵심 과제”라며 “포스코는 호주와의 전략적 파트너십을 통해 그 구체적 해법을 실천하고 있다”고 설명했다.
포스코그룹의 호주 협력은 1971년 철광석 공급을 시작으로 반세기 넘게 이어지고 있다. 현재 호주는 포스코그룹 원료의 약 70%를 담당하는 핵심 공급국으로, 철강·이차전지 소재·청정에너지 등 미래산업 전반에서 협력 관계를 확대하고 있다.
장인화 회장은 “호주는 포스코의 안정적 원료 공급자이자, 저탄소 시대를 함께 여는 전략적 동반자”라며 “특히 세 가지 핵심 분야에서 긴밀한 파트너십을 구축하고 있다”고 강조했다.
첫 번째 협력 분야는 철강산업의 탈탄소 전환이다. 포항제철소는 석탄 대신 수소를 활용해 이산화탄소 배출을 획기적으로 줄이는 신공정 ‘HyREX(하이렉스)’ 기술을 준비 중이다.
이 공정에는 호주의 재생에너지로 생산된 청정수소가 활용될 예정이다. 포스코그룹은 이를 통해 탄소 저감형 철강제품을 생산, 지속가능한 산업 전환의 모범 사례를 제시할 계획이다.
두 번째는 이차전지 소재 공급망 확보다. 포스코그룹은 리튬, 니켈, 희토류 등 미래 핵심 자원 분야에서 호주와의 협력을 확대하고 있다.
특히 호주 광산에서 채굴된 스포듀민(Spodumene)을 활용해 2024년부터 한국 내에서 수산화리튬을 생산 중이다. 장인화 회장은 “이는 화석연료 중심의 협력이 이차전지 원료 분야로 확장되며 질적 전환을 이루고 있음을 보여준다”고 말했다.
세 번째 협력 축은 청정에너지 생태계 조성이다. 포스코인터내셔널은 2022년 호주 해콕에너지(Hancock Energy)와 함께 천연가스 개발·생산 회사인 ‘Senex Energy’를 공동 인수했으며, 포스코홀딩스와 포스코E&C는 호주 내 수소 생산 혁신기업들과의 협력을 추진하고 있다.
장인화 회장은 “한-호주 협력의 스펙트럼이 철강과 자원 산업을 넘어 미래 에너지 영역으로까지 넓어지고 있다”며 “이는 APEC이 지향하는 회복탄력적 공급망의 실제 구현 사례”라고 평가했다.
한-호주 양자 협력은 일본, 중국 등 아태 지역 주요 경제권으로 확장되고 있다. 포스코는 2010년 호주 로이힐(Roy Hill) 철광석 광산 개발에 해콕프로스펙팅, 일본 마루베니그룹, 중국철강공사와 공동 참여했으며, 현재는 마루베니와 함께 호주 포트 헤들랜드 지역에서 탄소저감 철강 원료인 HBI(Hot Briquetted Iron) 생산 프로젝트를 추진 중이다.
장인화 회장은 “이 같은 다자간 협력은 아태 지역 주요 경제 주체들이 함께 지속가능한 공급망의 미래를 모색하는 의미 있는 과정”이라고 강조했다.
포스코그룹은 경제·산업 협력을 넘어 안전과 재난대응 분야까지 호주와의 협력을 확대하고 있다.
장인화 회장은 “호주 뉴사우스웨일스주의 산불 대응 경험과 재난대응 시스템을 벤치마킹해, 한국에서도 지역 사회의 신속한 대응체계 구축을 지원할 계획”이라며 “대피시설 개선, 소방장비 지원, 재난 모의훈련 등을 통해 사회적 회복력을 강화하겠다”고 밝혔다.
마지막으로 장인화 회장은 “CEO 서밋의 세 가지 키워드 ‘Bridge(다리), Business(비즈니스), Beyond(그 너머)’는 지속가능한 미래가 선언이 아닌 실천으로 완성된다는 의미”라며 “포스코그룹은 한-호주 파트너십을 통해 회복력 있는 글로벌 공급망을 구축하는 ‘새로운 다리’를 놓고 있다”고 말했다.
그는 이어 “APEC 공동체와 함께 협력해 지속가능한 내일을 만들어가겠다”고 연설을 마무리했다.

POSCO Group's partnership with Australia began in 1971 with the supply of iron ore, extending for over half a century. Currently, Australia is a key supplier, accounting for approximately 70% of POSCO Group's raw materials, and the group is expanding its partnership across future industries, including steel, secondary battery materials, and clean energy.

The second area is securing a supply chain for secondary battery materials. POSCO Group is expanding its cooperation with Australia in key future resource areas, such as lithium, nickel, and rare earths.
Notably, the company is producing lithium hydroxide in Korea starting in 2024 using spodumene mined from Australian mines. Chairman Jang In-hwa stated, "This demonstrates a qualitative shift in cooperation, expanding from fossil fuel-centered cooperation to secondary battery raw materials."
The third pillar of cooperation is fostering a clean energy ecosystem. In 2022, POSCO International jointly acquired Senex Energy, a natural gas development and production company, with Australia's Hancock Energy. POSCO Holdings and POSCO E&C are pursuing collaborations with innovative hydrogen production companies in Australia.
Chairman Jang In-hwa stated, "The spectrum of Korea-Australia cooperation is expanding beyond the steel and resource industries to encompass future energy. This is a real-world example of the resilient supply chains APEC envisions."
Bilateral cooperation between Korea and Australia is expanding to major economies in the Asia-Pacific region, including Japan and China. In 2010, POSCO participated in the development of the Roy Hill iron ore mine in Australia with Hacock Prospecting, Japan's Marubeni Group, and China Iron and Steel Corporation. Currently, POSCO is pursuing a project with Marubeni to produce HBI (Hot Briquetted Iron), a low-carbon steelmaking raw material, in Port Hedland, Australia.
Chairman Jang In-hwa emphasized, "This type of multilateral cooperation is a meaningful process in which major economic players in the Asia-Pacific region are exploring the future of sustainable supply chains."
POSCO Group is expanding its cooperation with Australia beyond economic and industrial cooperation to include safety and disaster response.
Chairman Jang In-hwa stated, "By benchmarking Australia's New South Wales bushfire response experience and disaster response system, we plan to support the development of a rapid response system in local communities in Korea. We will strengthen social resilience by improving evacuation facilities, providing firefighting equipment, and conducting disaster simulation exercises."
Finally, Chairman Jang In-hwa stated, "The three keywords of the CEO Summit—Bridge, Business, and Beyond—suggest that a sustainable future is achieved through action, not just declarations." He added, "Through the Korea-Australia partnership, POSCO Group is building a 'new bridge' to build a resilient global supply chain."
He concluded his speech by saying, "We will work together with the APEC community to create a sustainable tomorrow."
