도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령과 시진핑 중국 국가주석이 30일 6년여 만에 정상회담을 가졌다. 미·중은 현재 상호 무역 및 관세 갈등을 계속 이어가는 중인 가운데 이번 회담을 계기로 풀릴지 향배가 주목된다.
트럼프 대통령과 시 주석은 이날 오전 '2025 APEC(아시아태평양경제협력체)' 계기 김해 국제공항 공군 제5공중기동비행단 의전시설 나래 마루에서 열린 미·중 정상회담에서 6년여 만에 재회한 가운데 트럼프 2기 행정부 출범 후 첫 대면이다.
양 정상은 트럼프 1기 행정부 때인 지난 2019년 6월 일본 오사카 G20(주요 20개국) 정상회의 당시 만난 이후 이번에 다시 재회한 가운데 시 주석 방한은 지난 2014년 7월 이후 11년여 만이다.
트럼프 대통령은 이날 기념 촬영 시작 전 나와 시 주석을 맞이하며 먼저 손 내밀은 가운데 시 주석과 악수하며 “다시 보게 돼 기쁘다”고 말했고, 시 주석도 “저도 그렇다”고 화답했다.
트럼프 대통령은 정상회담 모두 발언에서 "정말 오랜 기간 내 친구였던 이와 함께해 큰 영광”이라며 “매우 기품 있고 존경받는 중국 대통령”이라고 했다.
그러면서 “우리는 이미 많은 것들에 합의했고 지금 더 많은 것들을 합의할 거라 생각한다”며 “시 주석은 위대한 나라의 위대한 지도자며 우리가 오랫동안 환상적 관계를 가질 거라 생각한다”고 덧붙였다.
시 주석은 모두 발언에서 “미·중 관계는 전반적으로 굉장히 안정세를 유지하고 있다”며 “국가 상황이 항상 다르기 때문에 동의 않는 경우도 있을 수 있고 이는 정상적인 것”이라고 밝혔다.
또 “중국은 미국과 협력할 준비가 돼 있고 미·중은 친구가 돼야 하며 중국 발전은 ‘미국을 다시 위대하게(MAGA·Make America Great Again)’ 비전과도 함께 간다”며 "협력을 지속해 양국의 공고한 근간을 만들고 양국 발전을 위한 건전한 분위기를 만들려 노력할 것”이라고 덧붙였다.
트럼프 대통령은 이날 오후 미 대통령 전용기 에어포스 원편으로 귀국길에 오르는 한편 시 주석은 오는 11월 1일까지 2박 3일 간 한국에 머물며 경주 APEC 일정을 소화한다.
