도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 2일(현지시간) "시진핑 (중국 국가)주석·측근들도 '트럼프 대통령이 재임 중 절대 아무 일도 하지 않을 것'이라고 공개적으로 말한 적 있다"고 밝혔다.
미 'CBS 뉴스'에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 이날 방송된 해당 방송 시사 프로그램 '60분' 단독 인터뷰에서 이같이 말한 후 "그들(중국)은 (행동에 따른 결과를) 잘 알고 있다"고 전했다.
그러면서 "지난 11월 30일 한국 (2025 경주 APEC 계기)서 열린 미·중 정상회담에서 대만 문제가 논의되지 않았고, 초점은 주로 무역 갈등에 맞춰졌다"며 "시 주석과 대만 문제를 전혀 논의하지 않았다"고 전했다.
또 "시 주석은 그 이야기를 꺼내지 않았다"며 "사람들은 그 점을 다소 놀랍게 생각했으나 그들(중국)은 무슨 일이 일어날지 알고 있다"고 했다.
이어 '중국이 실제 군사 행동에 나설 시 미국이 미군을 투입해 대만을 방어할 의향이 있는가'란 질의에 "그런 일은 일어나지 않을 것"이라며 '만약 그런 일이 일어날 경우 미국은 어떤 조치를 취할건가'란 질의엔 "내 비밀을 공개할 수 없다"고 밝혔다.
중국은 대만을 자국 영토 일부로 주장하나 대만 경우 독립적 민주주의 국가 체제를 갖고 있는 가운데 지난 1979년 제정된 '대만관계법'엔 중국 침공 시 미국의 군사적 개입 의무를 명시하지 않고 있다.
또 대만의 자위 능력 유지 지원과 함께 중국이 무력으로 대만 현상 변경을 시도할 시 저지하는 것을 미국 기본 정책으로 규정하고 있다.
한편 트럼프 대통령은 지난 1일(현지시간) 자신의 트루스소셜을 통해 '2025 경주 APEC(아시아태평양경제협력체)' 계기 지난 10월 30일 열린 미·중 정상회담에 대해 "시 주석과의 G2 정상회담은 양국 모두에 매우 훌륭한 회담이었다"며 "이 회담은 영원한 평화·성공으로 이어질 것"이라고 밝힌 바 있다.
