브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 피트 헤그세스 미국 국방부 장관이 한국의 핵추진 잠수함 도입을 전폭적으로 지원하겠다는 뜻을 밝혔다.
헤그세스 장관은 4일 서울 용산에서 열린 제57차 한미안보협의회(SCM) 이후 안규백 국방부 장관과 공동 기자회견을 열고 “도널드 트럼프 대통령이 (핵잠 건조를) 승인한 것을 다시 한번 확인드린다. 군 당국에서도 최선을 다해 적극 지원하겠다”고 말했다.
그는 “핵추진 잠수함 관련해 국무부와 에너지부 등 여러 유관기관이 있으며, 긴밀히 협조할 것”이라며 “트럼프 대통령은 동맹국의 방위 능력 향상을 원한다. 대한민국은 그 모델과 같은 국가로, 더 강력한 군사 능력을 갖추는 데 마음을 열고 승인한 것”이라고 설명했다.
구체적인 승인 절차에 대해서는 “아직 말하기 적절하지 않지만, 양국이 선의를 가지고 논의해 긍정적인 결과를 도출할 것이라 확신한다”고 말했다.
한편 트럼프 대통령은 지난달 30일 자신의 소셜미디어 ‘트루스소셜’을 통해 “한미 군사 동맹은 어느 때보다 강력하다”며 “한국이 구식 디젤 추진 잠수함이 아닌 핵추진 잠수함을 건조할 수 있도록 승인했다”고 밝힌 바 있다.
헤그세스 장관은 또한 한국의 방위비 증액에 대해서도 환영의 뜻을 전했다. 그는 “대한민국 정부가 방위비 지출을 늘리고 미사일·사이버 등 핵심 군사 능력에 대한 투자를 강화하기로 한 점이 매우 고무적”이라며 “양국 방산 협력도 강화할 것”이라고 말했다.
특히 그는 “미국 역사상 처음으로 미국 군함의 수리와 유지보수를 한국이 직접 진행할 수 있게 됐다”며 “이는 양국 협력의 상징적 진전”이라고 강조했다.
그러면서 “조선업뿐 아니라 지상 장비, 국방 연구와 과학기술 분야까지 협력을 확대하기로 뜻을 모았다”고 덧붙였다.
